A good tip I was given a few years ago by a relative who put petrol in his Renault DCI, was to add a ltr of two stroke oil to the first tank full of diesel after draining.
This gives the injector pump added lubrication should there be any residue of petrol left in the tank;).

new update the garage today has done some more checks and found out there is no power going to the fuel pump (just like television said) its getting to the relays in the tank but stops there,he has said that they are limited in there knowledge of auto electrics (which i prefer honesty)so they are getting an auto electrician in tomm.

thanks simon

what do you reckon when they emptied the fuel out of the system they've managed to do something to cause this problem ?

Maybe a silly question, but is there an impact switch on these pumps (ie. to stop the pump spewing out fuel in a collision)? Normally its just a button press to reset.

Yes either there or around the filter,, these pumps usually take a signal from the CPS as they must not run all of the time

hi guys well the saga continues and so does the bashing to my wallet, after fiting new fuel pipes i got the car back all running fine, the mrs went shopping and i got another phone call the car has just stopped again, called the aa out he checked the fuel filter put a hand vacum pump on it primed it and it started for a moment,he said its not priming,it was running fine for three days so i cant see how it could be the fuel pump in the tank, has anybody got any ideas or should i just bite the bullet and put it in mercs.iv'e already spent £460 trying to get this back on the road,do you think i should give it to a merc specialist and pull it away from my local garage ?

thanks simon

it would be worth checking the output from the rear sam as colin, aka sam unit suggests. an easy thing to check and possibly a cheap fix.

the explanation you were given for the fault does not add up at all, more like they fiddled for a while and it started to work...........

if you are in or near suffolk simon then get in touch.

The SAM is a signal acquisition module , a device that monitors all of the cars electrics.

I agree Alex,, it does not add up at all on what was a simple every day occurrence

hi guys the garage was given an ultimatem today by my mrs either fix the car or give us back our money,They rang this afternoon and said they are refunding the labour costs and washing their hands of the car,the owner said i think its the fuel pump but if it doesnt work you probably be unhappy about it (what an idiot) strangly enough when my daughter went down to collect the keys they drove it out of the garage,so i think they did just get lucky when they looked at it, as said above,im now going to take it to an independant tommorow morning, armed with some of your ideas this is definately an itermittant fault and probably the sam unit as said.

(dont mess with my mrs)
