Went to refuel in Stratford upon Avon this afternoon. In the space of a couple of hundred metres I had to avoid, or stop for 4 drivers who were not in control of their cars - 3 using hand held cellphones whilst negotiating a roundabout and one having a bottle of pop and a sandwich whilst driving through town.

Any career conscious law enforcement person could earn 2 promotions by tea time around here - if any one could be bothered to do it.

Laws which are not enforced effectively are purely an invitation for people to ignore the law.

You have to drive defensively just to get to the supermarket, swear to god that most people drive completely on autopilot with absolutely no awareness of what is going on around them.

when I was still teaching the noble art

I used to decribe it as driving "HUA". answers on a postage stamp please as to what I meant.
I think there is more poor driving today than ever there was. Not particularly objective I know, but I feel better qualified than most to comment, and it makes me shake my head and wonder most days.

full marks Alex

I got the idea from Joseph Wambaugh in one of his gritty novels, and it stuck with me.
I had one on the way home. Just had to get past me, and nearly killed a cyclist in doing so. and then nearly collected another one two hundred yards further on. Blind-sided on the left courtesy of the cheap plastic sheeting covering the window aperture. and guess what, two seconds after he pulls up at the roundabout, so do I, and of course I have the better of him in pulling away.
What was it all about, Herbert? ( cue for a song I think)
