On the way to the annual prilgrimage (GTG on other site in Torquay) I drove very fast. 100mph on the speedo most of the way from Glasgow onwards. By Brum (3 1/2 hrs later driving time) it was night time and the M5 was completely deserted and the night was clear and visibility A1.

So I continued @ 100mph on the speedo (set the cars limiter to this) and low and behold a dark blue volvo with blue lights on it appeared and was pulled over. I got an FPN for doing 96mph over a 1.875mile distance.

So, if you live near Brum, the cops have a dark blue V70 estate and it

a) doesn't have heaps of ariels dangling of it
b) hasn't got two interior mirrors
c) is pretty much unspottable and manned singly (it was a woman who was driving it).

I have to say, whilst I was travelling at a high speed, I did nothing IMHO dangerous, and really, the police should/must have higher priorities than patroling the M5 completely covertly. I know I broke the law etc, and have taken the punishment like a man, but I can still be miffed a) I got caught b) that so many other types of crime go undetected.

So lads, a ton may be fun, but its expensive fun.

You are lucky she didnt catch you over 100MPH... It could have been whole lot worse.

Best to be safe than sorry. I know what you are saying about not being dangerous etc but the judge wouldnt take your side on this and you would get punished.

Did you get SP30 or SP60?

I was made up today on the routes thru deepest south wales up to the north via the A49 to see several unmarked cars and bikes in action. Their target.. the %$^&** bikers who treat every road as an extension of the Isle of Man TT course. I have never witnessed such contempt for other road users as convoy after convoy of these cretins tore up the backside of vehicles before diving out in to the face of oncoming traffic on two way stretches to overtake at speeds double the actual limits. As I approached a junction a bike tore up behind me at what must have been the ton and overtook. At the same time down in the distance a car I had seen and adjusted my speed for, was making a right turn from a side road on my left. Bikes brake come on and it's wobble, wobble. Unluckely they didn't fall off. The driver emerging had done nothing wrong. They could not have , nor should they have, been expected to foresee a bike travelling at 100 mph in a 40 mph area.

Sorry to hear the rotten news,,it was the speedo error in your favour that saved the day (2.5% fast),,I hope that it is just the 3 points

I had the road angel too. Knew if limiter set @ 100mph I would never get ban  but if set @ 105mph then not so good as my car is 101mph on the GPS

Torquay was lovely. Was going to PM and try and catch you but so long a journey as speed on way up was suitably slower.

Is just an FPN so 3pts + £60, said at 96mph could be reported for court but was letting it go due to favourable conditons (FA traffic, good visibility + weather etc).

Dark blue V70. Blends in perfect with the night time  Very unpsporting of them. MB should design a stealth paint which makes the car go invisible so vascar doesn't work....

Out of interest did the road angel provide any useful warnings of other hazards on the way south - eg those fine people who insist on parking their tranny vans on bridges and being nosey?

Yes it did - numerous times on the M6 I have been alerted to vans etc. Also saved me on the M40 where I was told of 2 vans on the same trip. Both occasions were licence threatening...

Dear Stephen,

When you get older you will not need Road Angel, or to drive at 100 mph.

If I infer correctly that your journey was from Helensburgh to Torquay, if you were on the M40, you were lost! Going faster does not alleviate this problem, although it is the commonest reaction of sufferers.

Alex.

And yet we are told that the most effective way of altering driver behaviour is visible policing?

Alex.

I do the 153 mile journey to Herts on the A303 many times a year,, mainly at speeds of 75-80 mph,, this spring on a lovely morning I set off with the roof down, and did no more than 60 mph and the difference in time was only 8 mins at my coffee break point, 120 miles down the line

Staffordshire use unmarked BMW 530ds.

When I was done for 97mph (SP50) I had a very pleasant chat with the patrolman, apparantly the diesel BM's start to run out of puff approaching 130mph. He'd had to call in the helicopter on more than one occasion.

Interestingly, he reckoned that plenty of his colleagues had points for speeding and that one or two were pretty close to the upper points limit!
