...its a big hobby for most drivers on the continent to just pull out regardless of the speed anyone else is doing... above 120 (real numbers not kph ) you will find trying to miss a car doing 65 in 100 metres is hard work
I doubt I'll ever see above 85mph , after all I serviced it and did the brakes  (and Mrs W is in the passenger seat watching )

Because the roads are designed for proper speeds you'll be surprised on how fast you can go (when it's clear) without the management getting overly concerned - I had the cruise set at 145 mph on my W210 E320 CDI through Germany with my very nervous ex-MIL in the back and she never even noticed. The road substrate is somewhere between 80 and 120 cm thick (rather than the 30-60 cm we have) so the roads don't sink the same with HGV's and the bend radius is made for 911's at 188mph :)

The timmelsjoch pass is very good going from austria to italy if you're in that area, a lot quieter than the stelvio. The Furka, Grimsel, Susten and Nufenen loop in switzerland is a great way to spend a day.
I have done the Timmelsjoch numerous times on a motorbike. It is a bit narrow in places for a car, but as you say not that busy.

To be honest I found the drivers there (Germany) quite good at keeping the fast lane open and certainly a lot better than the UK. IIRC there are no HGVs allowed on the roads on SUNDAY so that is a good time to get the high speed driving bug out of your system.

Slip roads are shorter and most of the network is 2 lanes not 3 lanes and the mentality, atleast in Spain/Italy/France is more traffic flow based than priority based. So yeah, you need to look for things like cars on slip roads and cars/lorries that may need to overtake and if they indicate slow down for them because that often means "I'm pulling out" and they are giving you warning to slow down accordingly.

To be fair, I can count the number of times I've had to brake on one hand, but ease off when I technically have priority is an everyday occurence in Spain/France.

But isn't it just good driving reading these things anyway? I would do that in the UK and even more so if I was doing something like 120. You also have to remember that if you are doing over 100mph in Germany legally the crash is automatically your fault, so you effectively cede priority above this speed. Obviously if you were doing 120 anywhere else you would be at fault anyway as the merging/overtaking cars would not reasonably be expected to check for someone doing 40-50mph over the speed limit.

24.00 hrs Friday night to 22.00hrs Sunday no HGV's on the autobahn. Unless you have a special licence.

Made it down to Zell Am See area of Austria 1500km , 22 hours driving via Belgium , Edge of France and southern Germany . Done a fair few back roads , hence the time . Loved the Black mountains East of Karlsruhe . The German motorways were an experience , did a little bit of 100mph with the roof down on perfect tarmac . There were some cars doing some shocking speeds , made me look like i was standing still . Off to the Grosglockner alpine pass tomorrow , hopefully will get some decent pics , havent taken any yet .

I knew you would enjoy it. Black Forrest have fantastic roads, even better on a motorbike. If you come back that way find the B200 & do it.

^+1 (a strong recommendation!)

If you approach from the north, you go through a tunnel first and then there are three numbered car parks. If 1 and 2 are full, 3 is not that far to walk.

And if you are near Hallstatt and fancy a nice easy and level three mile walk round an Alpine Lake, try Gosausee, only about 30 minutes drive away.

? Did the Grossglockner twice today , spent about 3 hours driving it . Wonderful sunny weather with not too many other cars . Just a couple of pics to wet your whistle . I can't recommend it highly enough
