I have replaced the ignition switch in my 1993 320SL to cure intermittent poor starting. Started great after repair. Now next day all the dash lights come on and it will not turn over. Disconnecting the battery for an hour last time seemed to cure it for a few days. Is it the immobilisor or the starter solenoid ? Please help, I thought mercs were bullet-proof. Thank goodness I still have my 560 SEC that no one wants to buy.

Check that you have 12 volts on pin 87 of starter relay

Thanks for your suggestion, I disconnected the battery to reset the alarm, but still no joy. Do you know where the starter relay is located.

Thanks for any help.

Malcolm may well be right in that it could be an immobiliser gone wrong or starter relay malfunction.

Here's another simple one for you to try?

Have you tried starting it the the gear selector in neutral instead of park? The start inhibit switch could be faulty?

just one thought you have just replaced the ignition switch, the starter circuits are energised by the key switch is anything adrift on the switch.
the starter lock out relay is a small square one K38 in box in front nearside Module box On these relays pin 30 is normally volts in and 87 is output.
let me know how it goes. My car is very different and this takes a bit of time
