2004 W211 E320 CDi
Hi everyone.

I have now found the right w211 E320CDi that I want to buy (tomorrow morning quite likely)

I checked the VIN and the delivery date was October 2003, which means that the actuak build date could fall before Sept 2003 (when they sorted the Valeo problem) if I am unlucky.

Looking at the large main radiator, it has the straight "castle" crimps on the right hand side header tank, so I assume it to be a Valeo. no matter how much squinting and kneeling down I did, I cannot find the "white dot" or the manf lable.

Now in front of the main radiator in a long thin radiator situated horizontally in front of the bottom 1/3rd of the main radiator. This one clearly has a Behr Germany sticker on the top. I have no idea what this radiator is?

Can anyone please advise me whether I will have a "safe" car, or one with a potential for problems with the radiator/gearbox. My purchasing descision is hinged on this, so I would really apreciate any help as quickly as possible.

Many Thanks and kind regards

If it is a nice car and the rad is a valeo,, the cost of changing it is little and easily done.

You seem to have done all your homework well,, so check carefully for any humming or droning when pulling lightly in top.
I can Email the valeo rad paper to you

The smaller unit is the intercooler. Mine is a 06/2004 and has a valeo unit

I bought the car :D

I am still unsure on the radiator, so I got a few ££ knocked off the price so that I can afford to maybe go for getting a seperate transmission cooler fitted. Do you think this is a good way to go?

Thanks

You could do, or just get a replacement BEhr rad fitted.

Good luck then with the car,,A firm in Ireland was selling the rads at just over £100. If it is a Behr a label will say so

At least you get a choice on the E-class, they dont do a Behr for the W203:(
So am thinking of puttting a new Valeo one in from GSF as they are half the price of MB and exactly the same according to Valeo UK;)

There is no way that a new valeo rad could suffer from the old fault

valeo id

Like the OP I am also concerned about possible rad/gbox issues on a car I am interested in purchasing. Its a 52 plate 220 cdi classic reg early 2003 with 85k. I am also having difficulty in accertaining if the rad is valeo or behr. any pointers would be most gratefully recieved. If it is a Valeo - what costs are involverd to change to behr, and is this a diy job ?? Also anything else I should be wary of with this model ??
Many thanks

Steve

I have sent you the paper on it,, the valeo rads are not often marked as such but Behr rads do have their name on them.

It is not that expensive to change the rad,,if you want to do this I can give you the instructions

Cheers Television - any info on the rad change job would be appreciated. How many hours is it if it went in to an indie to be done ??

Thanks
Steve

The 203,211 and 209 up to the 30-09-03
I would be wary of the actual build date of the car as it could have stood around for a long time before first registration.
I know my W220 does not have the Valeo radiator, but there is an 11 month variance between it's build date (02/05/2004) and the date of first registration (22/07/2005)

Is there a way to find the build date? might it be one of the numbers on the piece of paper stapled in the back of my service book for example?

Kind regards
