Used engine oil disposal

Anyone tried to recycle used engine oil lately?

I have just returned from the Brunel recycling centre in Newton Abbot, where I was only permitted to “recycle” one 5L sealed container per day of used engine oil, rather than being able to dispose of it in a larger container as per previous years.

Both my vehicles take approx. 8.5L of engine oil, how can it be environmentally friendly for me to make two separate trips to dispose of the used oil?

As my car does not take a multiple of 5L of oil, I will not have enough containers for the waste oil, and will therefore have to purchase 5L plastic containers in which to place the oil for disposal, one container per day, of course. I cannot help but wonder how much co2 is generated in making and transporting these containers and me subsequently making multiple trips to the recycling centre.

Given that I could technically recycle 360+ containers of oil in a year (1800L of oil), I cannot see how me wanting to dispose of 10L of oil in a single day is such an issue?

I do my best to be a law abiding citizen, yet given such unnecessary bureaucratic rules, I can understand why the countryside is plagued by fly tipping and environmental disasters.

If we want a clean and tidy Britain, surely it would be preferable to make it easier for households to dispose of legitimate household waste rather than making it as difficult as possible which seems to be the current policy of Devon County Council.

My local “tip” has two big tanks that you can tip your oil into…. I usually empty two 5 litre containers without a problem.

Our tip has a skip for metal.
As far as I know that creates a revenue as it's effectively sold.

I've been stopped twice for flinging solid metal, ex car stuff in. I've been redirected to some scrap merchant some miles away.

There will be a justification but I'm to thick to get it.

Had similar here, went to get rid of a load of rubble and plasterboard, I was ceremonially told I can only get rid of 2 x 5kg bags a day, if I had more then I should get a skip, it’s mental as all these places are outsourced to companies that make money from selling stuff,

Alternatively, mix it with creosote and paint your fence posts.

My local recycling centre has a container to tip used oil into.
I generally pump it out in 2ltr drinks bottles and when I’ve a few I take them, and tip them out.

Perfect, I shall pour it into all the potholes in the local roads

I had no problem recycling 25L the other week at my local depot .
Maybe next time tip the other few Litres into a used paint tin

Just had mine removed yesterday. There was a February deal on, £49+vat per 1500L. Slicker recycling. Normally £150+vat.

We have two tips near me run by different councils....one's got loads of silly rules like that...and you can't even go at all without booking an appointment! The other does not care as long as you put stuff on the correct places. So just go to a different tip. Or pour it down the drain....but not outside your own house of course...at night. No one will ever know!


They wonder why fly tipping is rife. We are going to fortnightly bin collections here soon.....but still only allowed 5 bags per collection....same as it was when is was a weekly collection! We will be getting a food waste recycling bin sent soon too. I emailed the council to say how stupid it was....they said it won't make much difference as 40 percent of all rubbish is food waste.....I said what complete and utter nonsense can you show me the data to back that up....strangely she couldn't. The ONLY food waste we have in a normal week is tea bags (To misquote Joey from Friends....Dean does not waste food!). As it happens we can fit a fortnights rubbish into 5 liners easily....but some families in the this area put out four or five bags a week.....they will struggle. I told the council lady that I hoped she had put enough funds aside to clear up the massive increase in fly tipping that's almost certainly going to happen.....got no reply to that one!

At the moment it's black bin (general non recyclable rubbish, max 5 black bin liners) is once a week and green bin (recyclable) is once a fortnight.
From 1st April black bin will be once a fortnight....but with only 4 black liners worth!! Green recycling bin remains once a fortnight....even though we fill it in that time and they expect us to recycle more to minimise black bin waste. And the new weekly collected food waste bin will come into action at the same time....which in our case will be virtually empty....but if you do use it will stink after a week in the summer. Some overpaid moron at Arun District Council has somehow managed to not only made sense of this in his or her head but convinced councillors to vote it through. There's gonna be crap tipped everywhere.

Black bin non recyclable every 3 weeks.(talking about making that every 4 weeks)..
Green bin garden every 2 weeks but have to pay £43 a year extra for that service.
Recycle and food waste every week.

Get yourself a compost bin....put all your garden and food waste in there...free compost for your garden, pots and basket and no £43 to pay....
.....and anyway around here it's £91.78 per year plus a £25 bin!

Over here,
Green bin (general waste) every other week,
Grey bin recycling opposite week to general bin,
Brown bin garden waste (as above have to pay extra) goes with recycling,
Grey bin with green lid, glass, every 6 weeks

Family of three with pets, and I have to admit we just fill the green bin by the end of the second week, usually a small squash down with the last bag but the bin then closes.
Like others I remember moving from a weekly to a bi-weekly, it just happened and it worked, the odd household needed to contact the council to request an extra large free bin (family with 5 kids) but other than that, nothing wrong, fly tipping didn’t increase and the air wasn’t thick with stench from rotting waste either.

Like most of the above we are every 2 weeks for recycling (including glass) and waste.
It bothers me the amount of packaging there is, yes most is recyclable but I try and avoid packaging as much as possible. Waste bin is rarely full with just 2 of us most of the time.
We have a garden waste bin as well, that’s “free” (included in council tax) and collected bi-weekly from March to November. Have a compost bin as well so not much goes in the garden waste bin.

I was lucky enough to get a tip permit for my van knowing it would help us renovate the new house , had to jump through several hoops to get it though, and just had a letter saying council tax is going up from april . £1800 is the new figure!.

I had one for my Landy - although I had to send in pictures so show it was a “car” rather than a van… could also take trailer unlimited, although they changed that to 6 times per year.
