So basically the "rules" are determined locally, by individual councils and recycling centres, so what they allow in Devon has no relation to what is allowed in Wiltshire, Hampshire, Surrey, or anywhere else.

Also, the "rules" will vary, according to who is on duty, what they can get away with locally, what suits them, what they can make a profit (or loss) out of etc. So I believe local recycling centres have quite a lot of freedom to decide what rubbish they take, how much they charge etc. And of course, once you think you have worked out what is going on, the "rules" will change.

Round here, many are looking at re-introducing the appointments based system, where you had to specify what you wish to dump.

I remember the old days, visiting the tip withl my dad, when you just left everything in a huge pile for the flies and ahem "travellers" to sift through it. Often your rubbish would be taken before you got it out of the boot.

Roolz constantly change, and then Councils wonder why fly tipping goes on.

Has anyone driven past the fly tip on the A34 at Kidlington? It's mahoosive and didn't appear overnight.

We now have to pre-book a tip run for a 30 minute slot, advise vehicle type, trailer if applicable and it's size, registration number of vehicle, address where waste comes from, is there any DIY bits, and plasterboard/bricks/blocks. When you arrive the vehicle is cross referenced with the booking and you are asked what you are tipping. Tip in correct skip. Fortunately being retired weekdays are less busy and able to get last minute bookings if the weather is good!

Last year the vehicle had to be registered at the address. No restrictions on plasterboard etc.

We have weekly black bin general rubbish collection. We seldom cover the bottom of it. Newly introduced weekly food waste that we have to put food waste, just peelings as we eat the food we prepare/cook. Bi-weekly green recycling bin collection, that we normally fill both bins with mostly packaging, particularly when done a Costco bulk run. Bi-weekly garden waste bin that we pay extra for annually.

We have to put the bins at the edge of the property boundary before 07:30 on collection day, but not the overnight or the day before. The lids have to sit flush closed. Once the bin men have been we have to find them in the road, down the path, in someone else's garden; oddly not back where we left them as the Roolz imposed upon us

National joined up thinking, that would be logical. So no chance.

Bin colours differ between local authorities. Here our garden stuff goes in green, when I had to bother about Denbighshire it was brown.

Some you had appointments, others not.

We're still lucky I can turn up and dump the stuff, in an organized fashion. But no appointments.
That's until our Labour council see a way to tax us further for our waste.
Then beautiful High Peak will see an increase in the lanes and laybys having cr*p left for the council to clear up.

We have that exact same rule but before 7am... in fact it's now a local bylaw!.....one that's almost universally ignored...everyone, with one exception, puts their bins out the night due to the antisocial time it has to be out by....the exception is ME.....I have a sleep problem....basically I don't.... hence why im posting at midnight most days like today!.....and so I've been awake for ages by 7! Because of this I'm also one of the few that's not had their bins knocked over and emptied by foxes in the night, later ably assisted by the local gulls....leaving rubbish strew all down the street as living by the sea it's windier more often than it's not. It's fun to see them trying to collect all their rubbish in a force 7 though....the ones that bother at least!

We are lucky with a small rural location tip only ten minutes away and they've never queried old oil quantities. I hope it's the same when both of our "more than 5l capacity" cars need their summer services this year. I did pull up in the town supermarket car park the other week to see someone had dumped two 5l cans of old oil in the hedge just forward of the space, one with no cap on. Lazy so and so.

Part used paint seems to be the biggest issue at our tip though. They don't accept it and direct folks to another one about a 20min journey away. There are often old paint tins in the first lay-by from leaving our tip.

Well so far i have 7 tins , or containers of old engine oil .And another one soon after i get to change it on the merc

I keep my old oil and mix it with creosote for doing the garden fences. I give it to family members for the same purpose.

I use it also on the bottom of my mower to keep the metal worm away.

But for the OP, depends on the recycling site operator. They can be right arseholes. Is there a sign saying only 5L per day. It is daft. Its not like anything over 5L woulld make you a commercial user and also people tend to collect their rubbish for a skip run.

they do .... we are allowed around 50 tip trips a year, they have ANPR recording vehicles as they arrive.

Same at my skip. They stopped me and said you are not registered. So i went online in the car and registered.

I collected mine in 20ltr drums and our local tip had the 5ltr rule, had one disagreement on the subject but as their tank is tucked out of the way and not manned usually had no problems. Not had to go since working full-time as I dispose at work.

My last boss would take 20 & 25ltr drums in his Audi and plead dumb on the 5ltr rule. He would also pour coolant into the soakaway with a river on the property, traceable to just outside our door.

Eventually we convinced him to do it properly and have a company take it away so numb nuts puts all the separated oil, coolant and brake fluid in the supplied 205ltr drums having to pay more.

I dread to think what he is doing now myself and the office lad have left, it will be at someone elses financial detriment. I was separating drums of used oil out and giving them to one of the other units as they had an oil burning heater to save him money.

Just done the tip run.
I like early Sunday cos the roads are quieter, and there are far less people that can't reverse when I get there.

2x 211 air struts went in non recyclable as there was no one monitoring that. If I had gone to the metal skip no doubt a school leaver would have rejected me. There is a lot of non recyclable rubber anyway.
I used to separate my other stuff, but today the lot followed the struts. For the little bit of wood and metal bits I can't imagine they would thank me for my effort.

I've a 20L oil can, with a vent. Fantastic for emptying w/o gurgles. They don't tell me that's too much, yet.

I despise those that dump in laybys and such. But consider that if tips aren't user friendly then they can expect more of it.
