tempted by 2001 V12 coupe CL600, low mileage, full history, looks 100%, what problems might I expect, insurance cost, and what should I pay, car is immaculate, I am not sure but I do not think it has turbos. advice appreciated,

Looking at other models for sale nationwide would be good to determine its value, for insurance it's better to get quotes as that will depend on personal cicumstances, use moneysupermarket.com for a flavour but maybe try more specialist insurance and a wider search if you actually buy it.

Problems to expect, no idea.

Its a W215 and a V12 to boot so usual suspects and most expensive items are ABC and coil packs.

So be sure to test running across the full temperature range. The engine should be near silent. Running and gear changes should be smooth (unless hoofing it).

People often don't change the ABC suspension oil as often as they should - check that its green and not black.

A look at the oil level both before and after starting the engine can be a good indication of suspension accumulator health - it should remain within the marks on the dipstick. Once the engine is running cycle the suspension through its ride heights - switch on dash - it should raise and lower evenly all round and take just a handful of seconds to do so.

It's got loads of electrics so make sure that they all work (including the windows and sunroof)- typically at this age the soft close for the doors may have packed up due to microswitches in the door locks failing, the windows may have started to delaminate (they're double glazed), check for corrosion - front wings are plastic and much of the body work is aluminium not steel (the C pillar to body join is just one location).

If you're happy I'd advise a check with a good independent Mercedes specialist as once things go wrong on these cars the bills mount up - just remember that it was 100k new and the parts haven't really dropped as fast as the value of the car.

Good advice there. About half of the UK sales of this model are taxed according to How Many Left and one assumes another proportion are on Sorn, so longevity seems reasonable. There seems to be some success now in repairing/reconditioning coil packs so costs have reduced. Another aspect to look at is the cost of discs and pads if replacement is required.
If you decide to proceed, a contingency fund put aside of a few k might be advisable.
Look at vsandvs on YouTube. He is in the States but does a lot of work on V12's.

How much is the CL? That may have an impact on the risk.

Coil Packs at £1500 each

ABC £££££££

Rust ££££££

But what a car!"!!!!

Yea coil packs are nasty expensive.. I read about £1k each though. Also, I just saw a video from yer man Alex on his YouTube channel "Legit Street Cars".. he was saying that the coil packs are so fragile and can get brittle with age that, when removing to change plugs they can be damaged. When he was working at a dealer they used to have to advise the customers that they may break.... take that as you want..

Whats the story with rust? LMAO - I know what it is, but where is it a problem on these cars? Arches.. places underneath. Why is it expensive.. for the arches, is it a body shop job to repair/replaces the quarter panels?

I am keeping a keen eye on this as I would love to get an R230 V8 (And potentially even the V12...) Next year if all the stars (and then some) were to align.

@OP, there was another thread on here (in the insurance section) about insuring second cars, if this is going to be secondary to a daily driver insurance could be a lot more palatable.

Would be fourth car, daily drive a L322 vogue, plus 2 mercs, I have room and urge for 1 more but depends on insurance quote. Thanks for all the advice

£1000 to £1500 for a coil pack?:eek::eek: What's so special about them? IISTR that coil packs for Lotus Carltons were silly money from Vauxhall but were actually 3 coils from a US General Motors parts bin bolted to an ally plate. The 3 separate coils were actually quite reasonably priced if you knew what to ask for.

Made of really special plastic and tin? Who knows. 12 to each pack and made in one piece. MB, like all manufacturers, have their own special pricing strategy.

12 to each? I thought they had 6 (only one spark plug per cylinder as opposed to 2 on the V6/V8).

On the V12 there are two coil packs, and reading one thread on the other side from an electronics engineer who decided to repair his, apparently it’s a pig of a job (but possible st home).
