Vacuum pipes

Malcom, many thanks for your time, have looked at the russian site but it does not show vacuum pipes for the (124) injection pump or tell you why they fitted some cars with pneumatic pump and some with electromagnetic eventhough the cars could be built same month. Brian in Honiton

Hi Malcolm

there is at least 3 vacuum pipes from the diesel fuel injection pump on both types.

What car is this?

AFAIK the only vacuum lines to an early diesel IP are to the shutoff valve. I also think the lift pump attached to the IP is mechanical

What problem are you trying to solve?

My 1989 250 D has 3 4mm pipes at its pump, the one on top connects directly to the stop capsule, and the others (behind the pump) go one to the transmission too tell the box about the load on the engine and the other comes off the vacuum pipes near the pump at the front of the engine.

The two transmission related pipes (whiteish coloured?) will give troubles with rough and untimely gear changes, the other (brown) comes from a valve monted behind/besides the ignition key switch which in turn gets vacuum from the engine vac pump (brown).
If the capsule fails (or one of the rubber joining pieces leaks) the engine will not stop or be very reluctant to stop, juddering to a halt eventualy whilst tearing the bejabers out of your engine mountings. A vacuum is used to stop the engine and the emergency stop lever on the pump will stay down untill the ignition is turned on with a good leak free system.

As Nick asks whats the problem?

Yes, as per wireman's post really.

There's a pipe to the shut off valve, which only contains air at atmospheric pressure until you switch the key off, when the pipe briefly contains a vacuum.

There is a whiteish pipe which comes from the vacuum control valve to the valve on the accelerator mechanism on the injector pump.

From this valve, another vacuum pipe goes down to the modulator valve on the gearbox.

At the injector pump, connected to the accelerator mechanism is a valve which conains a variable leak to atmosphere. At low throttle openings the leak is small, and the modulator sees a hard vacuum. As the throttle is opened, the leak to atmosphere increases, and the level of vacuum at the modulaotr reduces, giving firmer shifts.

For this variable leak to work properly, there are also fixed orofice restrictors which are fitted in the vacuum lines. These must be present, clear, and in the right pipe location for the system to work properly.

vacuum pipes

Hi

what i am doing is fitting a 250diesel engine 1990 124 model into a 1992 300 24valve sl petrol. I have bought black vacuum pipe as there is no vacuum pipes on the diesel engine and need to know where they all go, Can't get any information from mercedes dealers or diesel garage where i bought the pipe from. Still do not know why some of these diesel engines were fitted with pneumatic pumps and some with elelctro magnetic, even though they could be of the same month and year.
Be grateful if anyone could help

thanks

If you are going to use the pneumatic stop system the vac valve is located on the steering lock arm, you will probably need to fit the appropriate steering lock/ign switch assy to get it to work.

Hi wireman

No - the 250d 1990 (124) engine i am using has an electromagnetic -this i understand has the idle speed control at the rear-but i feel whichever unit i use - you are right - i will have to change the ignition -lock (still do not know why mercedes used fuel injection pump where the rear of the pump is different could understand if they changed to a new model, but as i said previously ,you can get 2 1990 cars same month each with different pump.

Thanks very much for your time

Brian

Malcolm you could have a tube but it needs about 18 inches of vac to pull the stop lever and ones cheeks would cave in, Ive tried it, they do.
