I too would like to know the layout of these pipes for my 230TE.

There is a switch near the battery, there is a pipe from there to the gearbox...which side of the gearbox should this be attached to? (It's a black pipe with a biy of red)

The vacuum pump is under the back seat on 124 (think its the same for 190) 123 is a completely different system run from engine.

I beleive the CDs on Ebay have complete diagrams (unlike Hayes Manuals)

But this link will give you a good start with some pictures:
http://ow.no/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=98&Itemid=86

So when you turn the key (or press the remote) it sends a signal (electrical) to the pump which in turn opens the doors, boot, and petrol door by way of vacuum hoses (yellow).
I suppose thats a start.

The only other items of the 190e that i'm aware of (not sure) using vacuum is the headlight adjusting.
The w124 also uses vacuum to control heat distribution (opens and closes vents) for windscreen and feet, as described by Keith in tonights post: http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=9794

It the vacuum pipes to the gearbox that we are worried about.

The central locking is powered by a pump under the rear seat and is all on yellow pipes.

Sorry for being so little help, Turnipsock.

I said I'd try to 'give a start'.

The intake manifold vacuum is being discussed in a thread running alongside this.

Economy gauge , difference of w123 cl system etc.

Not sure of the two pipes you mention (just going from memory)(aged memory),
there are 2 pipes going to the headlamps (for adjustment).

Hope this may be of benefit to some people
