My E350CDI has an oil leak from the vacuum pump which was noticed by MB recently but diagnosed by my local indie whilst replacing rear brake lines.
The indie could not tell me atm if the pump requires replacement as he just investigated where the leak was coming from.

I've seen that in some cases a replacement gasket(s) can solve the issue. What are the chances of the pump failing as it looks very simple in that not much can go wrong internally?

Also what is the worst case scenario with replacement costs?

Thanks

It will be the gasket. It will be leaking between the pump and the block.

Can't say hie much considering other bits, and prices will vary depending on your location etc.

There are two places where a leak can occur in the vacuum pump, the gasket and the orange seal in the pump itself. The gasket can be replaced separately meanwhile the seal is not sold separately by MB and you have to replace the pump. In my w164 with the om642 engine I found the seal in eBay and replaced it. Has been bone dry since the replacement, 1 year ago.

Thanks Alex, the chap who looked at it suggested it maybe be leaking from the seal within the pump as shown in the picture above.
I'll have a good look later today - if it's the seal you mentioned it's readily available but the inner seal is a bit harder to find in the UK.
I hope you are all well down in Kent - a bit too far now from me in Clacton! ATB Alex.

That's exactly it. I see it's available as a kit from ebay but not from any UK sellers.
Did you buy from one of these?
Thanks

Unfortunately, the delivery time is 2-4 weeks from Ukraine. I have therefore ordered a replacement used part and a genuine MB gasket and will have a go at fixing it later this week. New pumps are on backorder@MB hence the used part.
Any tips welcome.
Also, any suggestions for cleaning up the oil mess underneath and deep inside the engine would also be helpful.

Replacement pump ready for a new gasket, the oil leak clearly coming from the internal seal within the existing pump.
All refitted and working with no leaks. Took just over an hour. MB wanted £160+ vat just to replace the external pump gasket (if it was leaking here) and would have needed to order a replacement pump.

I'll keep my original pump and get a repair kit and keep it as a spare.

Hi guys. Can anyone give me an idea of replacement costs for a pump on a C300h estate?

you may be better off buying a new gasket from MB and a used part off ebay, which is what I did. The used part showed no signs of a leak and has now done over 10k miles and has been fine. Not sure how easy it is to fit on a C300h but worth checking out.
