I'm going to change the auto fluid and filter in my gearbox soon, and wondered whether I can access the valve block from the sump? I wanted to check and maybe change the valve block as think I have a sticking valve/worn valve which is causing problems engaging reverse.

In a previous thread, Television says the valve block is easy to change. How can I do it?

Gearbox is 722.501 5 speed

Many thanks!!

The fault accasionally no power flow in reverse on the 722.5 box is the KS clutch leaky or gaskit damaged and is a gearbox out job. the valve block can be cleaned with the sump off, must be worth an oil change first, before taking box out.

Thanks television. I'll change the fluid and filter - last chance before I get the 'box overhauled. Is it worth doing anything with the valve block? It 'seems' like a valve sticking or something because it jumps into gear if reved hard. Once gear is engaged there is no problem or slip. Only happens when car is cold. I had hoped that it might be a worn seal in the valve block that I could replace. Are there rubber seals in the valve block?

It will be the KS clutch or gaskit, this being the main recorded fault for your problem, as I said it is a gearbox out job to remove the center shaft that that KS clutch is on, no great component cost, just labour. Many people in the USA do it themself, it depends how confident you are. by all means try an oil change first, the oil will not be wasted.

Thanks Television,

Do you know where I might obtain a technical drawing (general arrangement) showing this gearbox? I'm a mechanical engineer and would like to see the parts you are describing. Haynes manual and the workshop manual I have on CD do not give drawings, and I have no experience with automatic transmissions.

Give me your Email address and I will send you some details, With auto gearboxes hygene is the order of the day, the rest is quite simple.

If there are many pages that I have to print out I may ask to be covered for the printing cost and postage

Sinse the gearbox has to be removed or at least the rear section needs to come off would you like that info or just the pictures and info on the faulty bits in the box, and yes I have your details.

Pictures and info of the whole 'box would be great if possible, otherwise just those of the faulty parts. Would you recommend doing a complete overhaul, or could I get away with a limited strip just to fix the damaged parts? If I go for just repairing the damaged parts, does this mean I do not need to strip the whole box? Once I review the drawings/details I'll have to make the decision whether to do it myself or go for a complete overhaul by speciallist.

Thanks very much

Did you get any where with this? My 300TE-24 also has the 722.5 5 speed tranny and has recently shown exact same symptoms. I changed the fluid and filter today and it's no better :( so I know it needs work.

If you did it, how long did it take? I might do it myself or maybe this time pay someone... any recommendations London area?
