Hi, has anyone any experience of fitting the Van Aaken chip box to the 2.7 5 cylinder engine as used in 316 Sprinter, ml 270, or C or E class cdi. In the van it's said to increase torque by 37 lb ft, and brake horsepower by + 29 Roy

Have fitted these units to Landrover TD5's mate,Its Called a van Aaken SmartBox the device is actually a mini-computer with software specifically designed to intercept and modulate the information sent from the ECU to the fuel pump.

The price is about £450 for the unit and is no problem to fit....

Smart box

Thank's again land rover, any comments are allways wellcome ! I have found the 316 sprinter very high geared, and allmost impossible to keep to 30 mph in even 4th gear, this is very annoying, as one is allways changing gear.
My older 310 will happily plod away the same in 5th gear, as they say you can't have it allways ! the 316 will do a ton very easily on motorway.
I have to say van aaken have been more than fair, saying come up we will fit it, if I don't like it they will remove it no charge ! but I allways like to speak to a user !

310 sprinter, 316 Sprinter, c250 turbodiesel, the ony motors I have ever owned that I may have to remortgage the house to pay for repairs !!! Roy

I've just fitted a PSI Powerbox (Van Aaken alternative) to a T210 E320CDI our results are:
Advantages - Sharper throttle response, stronger mid-range
Disadvantages - Engine noise now intrusive, harsher gear changing, 11% worse fuel consumption! This was a back to back, like for like test over two tank fulls by my wife who was unaware that the modification had taken place and who is also known for her conservative driving habits, therefore this is as close as I can get to an objective appraisal.
These boxes are supposed to optimise the fuelling but I think they do it by overfuelling at small/initial throttle positions and are only of use where the driver can alter the driving habits to take advantage of the change i.e. holding higher gears longer and short shifting. This is of no advantage where the gear changes are done automatically especially where the changes normally occur in the lower rev range.
I have kept it in the car with a switch to switch it on when required and I will test its effectiveness when towing.
