The Spring budget was yesterday and as usual road tax has risen, but significantly more this time compared with previous years.
Regarding vehicles first registered from April 2017 onwards the annual standard rate will increase from £165 to £180 on April 1st.
The over £40k greed tax (lets be honest about it thats exactly what it is) will increase from £355 to a whopping £390!
What really gets me about this greed tax (apart from it being simply morally wrong) is that since its introduction in April 2017 and the year on year price rises, the threshold where it takes effect has remained static at £40k.
A person works hard for their money and rewards themself with a nice car, but our government effectively punishes them for doing so. Of course the first owner realises and grudgingly accepts this, but who it really hurts is subsequent owners because this tax still applies up until the vehicle is 6 years old.
If I still had my CLA the annual VED would rise £50 to £570.

Its madness. The govt have to pay to get all the roads fixed that they have let fall into such disrepair over the last 5 years. Thats going to cost huge. So much for biting it in the bud.
And where does our VED go.

Road tax should be abolished, we already pay huge amounts of tax on the fuel; and lets face it that's fairer as the more you use, the more you pay.

Why should someone with a 600bhp AMG who does 2,000 miles a year pay more road tax than a Ford Mondeo Diesel owner who does 30,000 miles per year? It's nonsenes.

But of course the green agenda gave them the fake reason they needed to fleece the motorist for no purpose.

The government’s job is to squeeze you to the maximum tax wise .
Also when you hear facts like over 50% of the UK population receive more from the state than they contribute you can see why it’s all going up .

If it's of any consolation, the road tax on my R Class was over £550 when I sold it 4 years ago
Thats madness, I purposefully got a later model to avoid the huge VED.
Regardless taxes only go one way ans thats up. Like all costs.

Leaving the £40k list price for higher VED static is just another example of Fiscal Drag which this Gov is practised at. It has already done it on Personal Allowances for the last few years...

It's not, but it will be for you if you are now paying much less. :)
As said things like this are only going one way and that is up, and disproportionately so.

I'm a "fan" of the "fuel duty hasn't increased" - no it hasn't but as the cost of fuel has gone up then the amount of tax collected has also gone up as it wasn't a fixed amount it is a percentage of the price. So whilst the percentages hasn't increased the revenue has.

Also no such thing as road tax - hasn't been for a good few years now - VED - Vehicle Excise Duty so it all goes into the exchequer and can be apportioned out as the great and the good see fit... :rolleyes:o_O
