Viano 3.0 alternator problem

I have a 2010 3.0 viano and last night I was driving it when all of a sudden the battery light came on and it said alternator fault go to garage so I turned it off after about 10 mins I turned it on then all the lights went out and the vehicle drove home ok does anyone have any ideas
