I have had a vibration and shudder issue with my 2016 E Class 220 Estate Auto. It occurs between 65 -80 MPH and feels like it is coming from the front. The vibration also seems to get stronger and weaker over a 2 second period - a bit like a throbbing!
It has had a vibration which feels like a wheel out of balance, the front tyres also have had unusual wear patterns.
I have had the the Alloy Wheels checked and straightened of any flat spots, changed the tyres and had the wheels balanced.
Does anyone have any similar experience or solutions?
Many thanks, Stuart.

I have same car and not experienced this, but others on other forums report this frequently with 2016 models in that the brake rotors and/or pads are out of alignment or leave pad deposits on the rotors. Both cause the symptoms you describe. Common discussion refers this to regular use of active cruise control/ distronic where the car is braking more than normal and causes distortion on the brakes due to overheating.

As I said, not happened to me, but others report it quite frequently.

Thanks for that. That sounds like it could a strong possibility. I will investigate further.

Can you borrow a set of wheels from a known good one?

Your symptoms still point to tyre/wheel problems.

I had exactly that problem with my C250 Estate. Realising it would be coming up for new front pads and discs, I had my Mercedes dealer rebalance the wheels at the same time. They seemed to take a lot of care over it - and the problem disappeared immediately. (I think the suggestion of trying out a different set of wheels if possible, is a good one, alternatively). I have since had my wheels rebalanced again at Mercedes (after a puncture repair) and again they did a great job. (although pricey as you might expect)

Hi

Did you ever get to the bottom of your vibration? I have an All-Terrain which does something similar. A pulsing vibration between 65-80 usually when the car is under load – i.e. driving on a long uphill stretch of motorway. The problem doesn’t feel like wheel vibration - I’ve tried two sets of wheels and the problem persists but lifting off the accelerator will ease the problem.

If it happens only when under load, it's not wheel balance.

More likely a CVJ or drive coupling on it's way out.

Thanks - something like that was my guess but it's intermittent so it's difficult to demonstrate especially in a flat county. The dealership I purchased it from have been very helpful and will take it in for a thorough check next week.

I know this quite an old post, I have a 16 plate E220 Night Edition, been using an independent Mercedes specialist now as main dealership are too expensive. It’s gone in for exactly the same problem, vibration between about 65 & 80 mph. They picked up quite a lot problems, most of the weights on the wheels had come off, both front tyres worn on the inner side, wheel alignment out, buckled front near side whee, suspension height too low. Long story short, all rectified and two new front tyres. Apparently you should only use Mercedes recommended tyres ?? I still have a slight vibration, I’m now so sensitive to it, I don’t know it it’s, me, the road, or the car. Needless to say, it’s going back in again.
