Hi all
I am at the end of my patience with this. With standard wheels on my 201,`91 reg 2.0ltr manual with 85.000miles on the clock, there was a minor wobble, which could be felt in the steering wheel and floorpan, both passenger side and drivers side.I put 8 hole alloys on and it was the same, but getting slightly worse.I have put new bearings on the front and new discs and pads all round and new shoes on the back as well.No change.I checked the car underneath, with a MOT mechanic helping me,checking joints, links and everything else.Nothing untowards.I put a new gearbox mount on,and has just put new couplings on the prop front and rear,to no avail. The money has not been wasted,as the everything feels better, and where the vibration was sometimes also at 50mph before,it is now from 60-65,disappears at 70-75 and then comes back above 75.Sometimes the vibration at 60 is not too bad, other times the vibration comes into such a swing it feels like the car is going to fall apart. Please guys,I really need some sound advice here,as the vibration completely spoils the otherwise beautiful ride.Could it be top struts?I have thought about engine mounts, but dont think they could cause a vibration like this.

id check the propshaft centre bearing next, and also check to make sure that no counterbalance weights have corroded and fallen off the propshaft and also make sure the couplings on the propshaft, if they are the universal joint type are perfectly aligned

A long shot as you've been very thorough, but I had something a little similar many years ago on a SAAB.

It turned out to be a sticky caliper causing one of the discs to get very hot - I see you've changed the discs & pads - have you checked for excessive heat on the discs after you've been through a fit of the wobbles?

What happens if you take it up to (say) 80 & then dip the clutch - does it still vibrate as you come back down through 75?

it's worth looking at the front top suspension mounts as they do perish & split with age

Hve you checked the alloys to see if all the weights are present?

Only takes 1 alloy with a missing weight to cause an unbalance.

Could be a bent stub axle on one of the front hubs. Have you checked these?

Thanks everybody
I have had the wheels balanced twice,so they should be ticky-de-boo.I would`nt
rule out a bent stub axle, but it is something that has become gradually worse as I have been driving the car.I bought it 7-8 months ago,and it was not something I noticed when I first drove it.It has developed over time.

Possibly. Have you tried swapping it for the spare?

Never got around to sort the spare out since I bought the car 7-8 months ago. What made me look at other things was that the vibration, although less, was the same with the standard wheels on,but thinking about it,the tyres on the standard wheels are even cheaper and nastier than the Chengshan tyres I have got on now.

It turns out, according to the garage which my mate owns and have done so for 26 years, restoring and maintaining MG`s mainly,I`ve got a `72 roadster as well, that 2 of the wheels have got the wheelnut holes out of line, which means the wheels when going round is more like an egg than a round wheel. One wheel being worse than the other.Back to standard steel wheels and start looking for 2 7.5x16 et51.Thanks for all your input, guys.Very much appreciated.Happy New Year to you all.
