At about 70 - 80 mph the 100K 2005 C Class 220 CDi starts to vibrate. Its not the wheel balancing as this has been very recently checked. If i look at the passenger head rest i can see it shaking. I can hear and feel the car shaking/vibrating! help, any ideas?

Tyres would be the first port of call, I would have them checked for bulges, or run out..

Was the car driving smoothly before the tyres were fitted?

If the car shakes at from say 30 mph and up then wheel balancing,,feel it in the front through steering, and the rear through the seat and car

Even with the old tyres the car vibrated so it can't be the tyres. I can feel it generally through the whole car. Could it be caused by a defective suspension component?

No it cant be that,, the prop shaft center bearing or flexi joints will do it, as will the engine mounts if one has sagged and the engine is throwing the drive chain out of line

I'm assuming then that you can't feel it through the steering wheel,so.....
Prop centre bearing or maybe a rear driveshaft.

get your gearbox oil glycol tested,
coolant mixes with gearbox oil through dodgy radiators,

quick check is your coolant, see if there are any oily deposits in it.

Surely the torque converter would be partially locked at 8o mph

can be yes, some 05 registered cars are actually 03 build dates, sit round for years before being registered,

it may not be but like everyones post on here, without looking at said car, just guesswork

In all of my years here and elsewhere I have only come across 1 car that was a few months outside the reg date

just had a similar problem. Bought my e class from scarborough mercedes nearly 2 years ago and they put 4 new tyres on, car was 25k and they put federals on it. it has 245/45/17's. they said they could not afford to put better tyres on as the car stood them at too much!!

Any way, car shook like a rag dol, 70mph and the passa=enger headrest wanted to leave the car! just had conit's put on all round and my god, its the car it should be.

smooth as a can be....

It could even be a bent rim, I would in this case attempt to borrow a set of known good wheels and eliminate the wheel n tyre problem, it is really only by trial and error that you tend to solve problems like this

if this car came into my garage i would check these simple things, 2 secs to check trans oil and coolant.

do a little search on the web, there are lots of manufacturers with stockpiled cars just sat there doing nothing, i remember reading an article about this showing pictures of 100's of cars sat there on industrial land.

ive seen countless cars, ie 210 saloon on 03 plate,it does happen, ive also worked on lots of cars, and seen this in dealerships , and with todays financial climate, cars not selling it will be even more commonplace,
