Hi, My friends S320cdi has recently developed a noise /vibration driving in top gear that starts at about 55mph thru to 60 when driven on light throttle, then dissapears and is normal after that, also if accelerated hard then it drives perfect, it only happens when driven on light throttle, almost seems as though its labouring and should change gear sooner, have cleaned the maf sensor, any ideas much appreciated, are you out there Colin? cheers Dave

If this car was made before 09 2003 then it sounds like the dreaded valeo fault with glycol in the gear box.

The way you have described the fault it fits perfectly,,humming or droning at light throttle when 1500 to 2500 RPM

No it did not,,I was thinking 211 but it could be possible, it does fit exactly though other things could do it.

I think that the balancing is in to narrow a band to be that

I know that this is not listed for this car,,but any rad can leak at some point it ilfe.

The exact words for this are.
Humming and droning, and or jolting during gentle acceleration at engine speeds of between 1200 and 2500 rpm

This fault can be produced at any time.

Changing the fluid will not help,, the damage if this is the torque converter clutch faces.

There are many other things that it could be,,a skilled engineer would know if it was the box.

MB charge £75 to test the fluid

To be honest i also thought about wheel balance! but would have thought that it would have shown on normal acceleration also not just when driven very slowly up through the speed range of 55-60ish

hi dave, is the symtom constant if driven at, eg 57.5mph, or is it associated with gear changes eg lock up clutch fault? if constant, could it be described as a whining/droning coming from the rear? if so could be differential, classic speed for that, also often worst on medium light throttle.

As the vibration is in a narrow band, this is a lightly damped resonance.

This is backed up by the comment that the range has to be driven through slowly.

Although a lightly damped resonance does eventually build to having a large amplitude, it takes longer for the vibration to build.

Usually, suspensions with their hefty dampers are well damped, and have resonances over a broader speed range; so, I don't think this is a wheel or hub problem.

I would begin by checking the propshaft and it's supports and bearings very carefully. I would check to make sure any spot welded balance weights are still in place. I would probably use a dial gauge to check the propshaft is actually running straight.

I would check to make sure the clutch and flywheel are secure, or flex plate if automatic. I would also check the crsankshaft pulley isn't delaminating.

Thinking on this,,one could possibly rule the gear box out by locking the car in a lower gear, and this would take the engine out of the equation as well, and running the car up to the speed where the problem starts

Yes the W220 does have the same problem I have on in at the moment, new gearbox fitted but not a new torque vertor so the problem isnt fixed.

The glycol does not affect the box,,only the converter
