Is it not a bit unwise to post your full VIN for everyone to see?

Is there anyone that can check mine in private?

It might be a good idea for a moderator to blank-out some digits in the vin number in the first two postings.

I wouldn't worry. There are much easier ways to nick a chassis number. After all, he hasn't given us his reg number!
Alternatively, wander down to your local car park. Find the car you want to clone (right model, colour, age etc), make a note of the reg no (from the big white plaque on the front) and take the matching chassis number from the plate clearly visible under the windscreen. Go home and make your new plates. bingo.

Sometimes we can be too cautious!

But what about the clearly-visible (windscreen) VIN numbers of almost every car on the road?

Moderators are going to be VERY busy with bottles of Tipex.!!! :D

If you read my posting, you’ll see that it was just the VIN number I was suggesting hiding…
Whilst I know you can read a VIN number through the windscreen of almost any car, you will surely concede that it’s a lot easier for a cloner to “cut and paste” of off this forum, than to mess about with a pen and paper in a public car park.
In these days of cloning and identity theft, the less we all reveal the better…

I take your point - but the Government don't seem to be too bothered about 'loosing' personal data - left, right and centre :(

True, but that’s what we’ve come to expect from the bunch of incompetents that govern us.
I despair that after methodically shredding anything with personal data on it, the revenue’s “professionalism” has ensured that the whole lot’s out there somewhere, on a couple of CDs.
Incidentally, why are we shipping Government IT work out to America?

An interesting point on the VIN number, mods on other forums do remove them.

When I ask for it, if the poster is new and cant PM, then I tell him to Edit the post once I have it, to remove the details, and we do get members from all parts of the world on here

There was a gang of car thieves in the New York area who had stolen & ringed so many cars, all Mercs, BM's etc that they had run out of VIN numbers to clone. They regularly sent 3 or 4 guys on a flight to LA to gather VINS from cars on the opposite coast in public car parks etc.
If they went to that amount of effort, a few off an internet forum would be no effort at all. It was on one of those cops under cover programs on TV a few years back, on how they brought the ring leader to justice.

in the uk anyway, a vin no is no use without the reg no it's attached to. Only if the 2 tie up will it tally with the DVLA and the cloning be effective. Otherwise you may as well just make the numbers up.
Hence, the best source will always be your local car park or dealership. If you want to be savvy, you'd just 'test drive' some for sale privately and then take the details from the original paperwork for "an hpi check". You can even get the engine number that way!
Lots of more effective methods than searching internet forums.

Maybe, or maybe not....but I'm sure users of the PNC database wouldn't agree with you.

Anyway, If I asked you for your current account PIN number, you - quite rightly - would tell me to get lost (even though without your account number this information would be totally useless).

In the same way, if some random person asked for my date of birth or maybe my NI number - they’d get short shrift too.
One individual piece of information may not be sufficient to put you at risk….but why would anyone volunteer their private/personal information unnecessarily?
Call me paranoid, but (IMO) the less people you give personal information to - the better.
