I just entered my vin number into the benzworld.org web thingy, and it said my car was built in 1976. And to boot, it says it's petrol.:?

My car is in fact a 2002 C220 deisel, built in Germany.
Anybody know of a reliable source for unwrangling vin numbers please?

TIA
Roger

Here try this Russian one http://www.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/index.html?lng=eng
Much better than American any day...;-)[/Q

Makes you wonder whether the yanks ever did go to the moon.....

Thanks Blobcat, it tells me everything, including when it was delivered, but where do I find out what date it was BUILT?
Is that part of the undeciverable blurb in the vin itself? :-?

TIA

sorry for butting in, but has anyone read the page titled 'Purpose of VIN decoding service' on the russian site, especially the text in red at the bottom.

I find it a useful site, but i do wonder where they got all the specs from in the first place.

I understand that you can derive build date from the Vin but I haven't seen it. What I do is pull off a couple of plastic lid - fuse boxes are a favorite and check the date stamp on the plastic. You will find this is probably within a month of the car being registered so is a pretty decent indicator of build date.

124 is chassis type
066 is 3.2 litre straight six cabriolet
2b is right hand drive automatic
the last 6 numbers just refers to the number built

So yes, all seems OK
