I have a 1990 190e, and have a problem with my viscos fan.

My mechanic says its not running in time with the engine, do I
replace the viscos fan, or is there an alterative solution

As Kieth, find another indie, where are you.

Take a large carrot, warm the engine up to 80c and try and slice the carrot in the fan, it it stops then the visco coupling has gone

tried the carrot and it stopped. so i assume it need replacing?
where is the best place to get a replacement and how much will it cost roughly?

I know this sound thick, but I have just bought this car( it cost me £50, the guy was desperate for cash), it is low milage (79000) and i want to keep it running and in good nick, and apart from a few minor nicks and scratches its in great condition.

please help

I would advise getting a viscous coupling from your Dealer. ECP do do them but to be sure, go OEM. As for cost expect to pay about £90. Hope this is of use to you. Good luck on what seems a nice car.

really confused now recieved this email today after putting out a search for viscous coupling

Hi
The 190 petrol vehicles do not have viscose's they have a electro magnetic
clutch, if this is what you want you will be looking at £30 + delivery +
vat.

If you would like to order this give us a call and speak to Karen and she
will take you card details and organize sending your order.

Thanks Chris

The easiest thing to do is to go to your nearest Mercedes dealer, into the parts desk, give them your VIN, and request a replacement fan clutch.

That way there will be no mistakes.

BTW £50 is a great deal :) Unless its rusting it's way to scrapyard heaven that is...

I can confirm the electromagnetic fan on my 190e .To test it locate the thermal sensor on the fwd. part of cylinder head and link out the terminals this should lock the fan in the energised position.

by the parrot, the car is a little gem, a few scratches, one small dint in the boot about the size of golf ball, but other than that she is a god looking lady for her age a milf of car so to speak

Yes just turn on ign and ground the top of the sensor, if the fan starts up it is the sensor
