I have mulitiple error codes and warning lights and yesterday the speedo started cutting out intermittently and going to 0mph. Mechanic has checked all wiring and found no faults. On suggestion I had was a faulty yaw rate sensor. As these are inexpensive I thought it would be worth having a go at replacing it. But where is it located?

Any help appreciated.

After fitting yaw sensor? If so I would think about leaving the vito with an autospark or MB independent specialist to diagnose unless your mechanic is up on his electrics. Maybe somebody else on the forum here is familiar with the symptoms. Ask your mechanic has he checked the ECU for water ingress as this is known to happen on vitos especially with the weather we have been having lately

I'm struggling to understand how a yaw rate sensor causes the speedometer to cut out?

Dont know enough about yaw sensors myself Kiwi but understood they were mostly for steering and ESP/traction control etc iirc. I suppose simple things like the battery condition was checked by the OPs mechanic. Sorry seen your original post was from last sept so a bad battery would have given up by now id have thought.

That's exactly what the yaw sensor does - it measures angular rotation of the vehicle and us used by ESP to detect variations in rotational acceleration vs steering inputs.

Sorry, I should have updated. ABS controller was removed and sent off to be tested / repaired. The found loose wiring / circuitry within it and re-soldered. Since re-fitting, ABS light and speedo issue has gone away (for now). But ESP light still comes on sometimes. And now, unlike before, there actually seems to be a pattern - braking and turning at the same time (not particularly aggressively) seems to trigger it. No I haven't replaced the yaw sensor yet. See that plenty of these are selling in ebay, so must be a common issue, but I can't find any info on how to locate the thing. Any help there would be appreciated.

Don't know on a Vito but in general the yaw sensor will be mounted to the floor or transmission tunnel usually near the front seat squabs. On a Vito being longer it may be mounted further back and possibly under the vehicle?

your right Kiwi, seems to be on the transmission tunnel just behind front seats on most 639 models according to 639 wiring diagrams I found on net. I might have mine on the lift sometime this week. if so I will confirm it if Yebaws still needs the info

Had a quick look under van yesterday, Yaw sensor is inside the van somewhere as I couldn't spot it underneath. Sorry didn't get time to look inside

No, still an issue. And now I have time to take the whole f***ing van to pieces and put it back together again. Would beat painting the house anyway. Thanks for the help, but still not clear on where the sensor is.

Sorry to hear that. I've just replaced both rear speed sensors and now having the same issue as you. May I ask why was the abs controller sent away in the first place?

Garage traced fault back to there. Apparently you have 2 options - replace the ABS unit, which has to be matched to the vehicle and therefore done by mercedes costing upwards of 1K or use a company who specialise in repairing the units. They charged £200 - £300 for "repairing" the unit. Seems like the unit did have a fault as the issue is not as severe now, but there is obviously a fault somewhere else as well...

Sorry to hear you still have problems yebaws. I will do a closer check for sensor under my van as its on the lift again for a DPF clean. My guess by that diagram its still between the driver and passenger seat? or in the general area. Hope Mercedes hasn't put it under flooring in the back:(

Hi guys, I'm starting to think like kev555 and will start my search inside (the description says transmission tunnel) so that's probably where I'll start maybe under the dash, then have a look under the seats and if that's a no go the only other place I can think of is in the central cabling channel going to the back (but that would surely be considered the propshaft tunnel?). Working flat out at the mo but will keep you posted if I get anywhere...Good luck fellow owners :)

Ok guys, as suspected its behind the lower central dash trim (under the gearstick trim). 4x torx screws pop that off and its bolted to...wait for it...the transmission tunnel right behind the srs ecu towards the drivers side (uk). Keep us posted how you get on, likewise I'll let you know if it sorts mine out hopefully at the weekend.
