i've got a 1999 vito 230 petrol, its high mileage but with merc dealer FSH

its developed two annoying problems:

1. heater fan is very feeble and intermittently doesn't work at all

2. rear screen wash fluid is leaking into nearside of rear luggage area..by interior wheel arch

does anyone else have experience of this...
how do you get at the heater fan motor?
what is the route taken by the rear wash tube?

i feel i must attempt to investigate the problems before handing over to local dealership....

suggestions gratefully received

regards

vito 230 problems

If you don't mind me asking Ian how much did you have to pay for your Vito and does it have fitting points on the floor which rear seats can be fitted in.

I want to offload my wife's big wobbly Seat people carrier and replace it with a Merc- she won't go for an estate and the V class is out of my budget.  Sticking rear seats and seat belts in a Vito though could be solution.

vito 230 problems

thanks for your suggestions....

in reply to Chris Silk...it is actually a V-class...although i think of it as a vito! after all it is a van...

i would recommend it...cost £9k at auction....ex-lease, v high mileage but with FSH (merc) ...three year old diesels are less common and more expensive....

its particularly comfortable for passengers...

you can get a crew bus version...called a traveller (i think)....less trim...

running costs not too bad so far..

fan problem sorted

i sorted out the fan motor problem.

its located next to the glove box in passengers footwell.

first remove trim that overlies fuse box...three circular black plastic clips at back and three clips at front

remove bonnnet release catch (2 screws) to improve access

cut plastic ties and move wiring looms aside...

fan motor is about 6 inches in diameter..housing is pear drop shaped and held in place by three gold coloured screws...

the 2 on the left are easy to remove....the third on right is more difficult..i used a long cross point screwdriver passed between hinge on glove box...

the motor can then be withdrawn with fan attached....with some difficulty...unplug power supply

the motor is disposable...i asked a local workshop in West Bromwich to try and repair it but they couldn't get any parts for it..

a new one from Mercedes is £117 with VAT

the non-dealer Merc Spares suppliers didn't have one listed...

reluctant to pay £117 i rang several vehicle breakers...

eventually i got a nearly new Sprinter fan motor which is identical..for £50...

fitting was easy....

warm again!
