Vito bonnet lock adjustment.

I have long had trouble with my 07 Vito bonnet release mechanism. I am onto my 3rd set of lever/ cables due to pulling too hard and damaging. The slider on the body mechanism seems to be working ok but won't function when the bonnet is shut. I have removed the "mushroom" / plunger type device from the bonnet and when I push that into the lower slider mechanism, it "pops" without issue when I pull the dashboard lever. Having loosened the bracket on the bonnet that the plunger screws into, I see there is scope for some movement when the screws are loosened. I can only assume that there is an need to align the mechanisms. Any advice please or is it trial and error. Thanks.
