over the weekend i started to hear a knocking/rumbling noise from underneath the van, had a quick look underneath - couldn't see anything suspect, but the noise seemed to be coming from the back box on the exhaust, so this morning went to ATS for a proper check, up on the ramps she went, and yep, the front Cat has broken up inside, brilliant!! "ok, can you give me a price to replace it"? after a bit of a search, it seems (although i haven't checked yet) that it is a main dealer only part, £428.82 + vat (£503.86)!!!!!!!! ****** glad i was sitting down when he told me, also told me he could do it for me for £470.00. Now i'm no expert, but £500.00 for an exhaust box? are they sure? or is it because it's a dealer only part, they feel they can charge whatever they can get away with?

Cat Prices

I can beat that, I wanted a cat for my S 500 and was told by Kwik-fit that the left one can be bought as an after market item at £370 but the right is only obtainable through the dealer at £750.???

As luck would have it the problem was with the left

****** Hell Dave,

Are you sure you have a cat as the sprinters don't apart from the new model Euro4 rated, This could be a case of kwik fix trying to pull a fast one and selling you a silencer but describing it as a cat. Ring up the parts desk at your local commercial Merc dealer and ask them. If you give them your chassis number they should give you a definitive answer and may be cheaper than ATS as ATS will be charging a markup on the list price and not the trade price you may be able to wrangle yourself. Could you not get away with replacing it with a straight pipe? might be worth talking to your MOT tester.

ATS didn't quote a price to me, because it's a main dealer part, he told me to go to MB for a price, so fair play to ATS for being honest, and if i bought one from MB, they did offer to fit it for me.
Oh and it definately has a cat, there's 2 types, one with a single box, and another with 2 boxes, ****** glad mine only has 1 box, the 2 box one is £805.91 inc vat

cheers for the link 230K, also says on that thread that as it's a diesel it doesn't need a cat to pass the MOT test, not sure if that's 100% correct, any ideas? i wouldn't like to chance it

Hi

As far as i know the CAT isnt checked at MOT on a diesel. Other way to look at is; what have you got to loose £30 to someone to gut it for you now and the chance of MOT passing, or just put a new one on when you need it if Mot catch on.

Make a few enquiries at testing stations if you need re-assurance

I'm getting the cat taken out of my V220 tomorrow & getting a straight pipe down to the centre box (nothing wrong with it) friend of mine changed a couple of weeks ago because his cat gave up & the vehicle wouldn't run right & don't want the same happening to me

Gut the cat, get shut of it. Either replace it with a short section of pipe, or open it open and remove the internals.

If you remove the internals make sure its patched in such a way that it can't be seen.

The weather is bad right now, but I'm trying to change the exhaust on mine (waiting for rain to cease). I could sell you the cat from my E300TD if you like, I bet its the same one. No rattles on this one. Worth considering, I don't want much for it.

just got a complete new system for £270.00 + vat inc delivery, and a 2 year guarantee, back box had a hole in it, so would've had to replace the lot anyway

Much more palatable, a whole system for about half what you were quoted for a cat. Good result:D
