Good afternoon all. I’m new to all this so bear with me please. I have a 59 Vito and I’m almost certain that the Sam unit has failed my question is does anybody know if the unit can fail completely and leave the vehicle immobile. And completely dead no ignition no interior lights nothing.

Water is usually the main culprit.
Mine went on my Vito but the van would still start, bought a replacement off ebay for £100 and away it went.

As long as the id numbers match it would be just plug and play.

Have you eliminated the battery / connections yet. Do you see 12 volts(ish) in the fuse enclosure anywhere? At the jump points would be a good starting point.

Thank you for your reply. Yes I’ve tested everything with an auto electrician friend all to no avail and am now certain it’s the Sam unit. Just wanted to know if it was plug and play. Just need to source a new part. Thank you so much.

Take the number off the existing,
typically 639 545 03 01, but not guaranteed.
I've bought from Ebay for less than £100.

Be careful removing as the smaller plugs break for fun, the one feeding the fan especially.

There are rubber water guides , 2 obvious toward the top of the guttering,
2 below the plastic on the wiper scuttle.
The drains at each side below the plastic are obvious.

Water will find its way around the fuse box area, but checking this lot can reduce it greatly.
I've seen ta fuse box dropped at the front, due to heat I guess. That killed one of mine.after water got in.

I have one with 2 known faults I use for diagnosis, if you are close enough.

Thanks I’m on the south coasts so probably to far away. as I said I’m 99% sure it’s the Sam unit. But not sure which way to go now, firstly a brand new part or get mine refurbed don’t really want to go scrap or eBay route. If it’s plug and play for sure I’ll go down brand new route I think.

My van has done a lot of sitting about prior to me buying it so I’ll definitely check that out as well. Thank you

Hi thank you that is the part number I have and yes I’ve seen the smaller plugs one was ok and the other is a nightmare but I’ll get there
