Perfect opportunity for some 'knit my own sandals' civil servant to mount an assault on diesel vehicles and a revision of VED banding :(

And so it begins.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-34407670

Has-beens, Greenies, and other swivel-eyed-loons all over Radio 4 news saying diesels are killing people.

Green nut job just actually said that diesels are killing "50,000 people every year in the UK" and called for a scrappage scheme and revision of diesel "car tax"

If they give me the value for my car I'll quite happily scrap it.

Then buy another diesel...... :p

I'm surprised they aren't blaming the sink hole in St Albans on Diesel cars!

I'd take good book price for mine and put it towards an E55/63 AMG Estate ...

Then sit revving it outside Green Party HQ

as would i. if the price was right, and the government paid the difference in fuel costs, insurance etc for a petrol with the same torque as my diesel car!

I'm still wondering how they're going to force this recall.

How are they going to, for example, contact the person who bought the car in a private sale or through an auction. And also doesn't use a dealership for servicing?

Certainly they can't until it comes to an MOT. But then that means altering every MOT test centre to be able to spot the affected cars.

DVLA as per.

Whether the owner can be bothered to go in to the dealers to have what amounts to having a few lines of code removed from the ECU is another matter.

Unless there's a penalty for not attending why bother?

Who pays

Why should the government pay for a problem(for once) that they did not create

true, but if it came to an enforced scrappage scheme, they WOULD be causing it.

All VAG has to do is remove the code which has been defined as the 'cheat' code. You could call that a remap.

Then it would be up to the regulatory authorities to reassess the emissions on a per vehicle basis and see if it fits into the existing regulatory framework.

That framework is almost certainly going to be revised.

That will take a few years by which time most of the Euro 3, 4 and 5 vehicles will be at end of life.

its more than removing the 'cheat' map. it has to also bring the vehicles into line with the legislation in force at the time to make the cars legal for sale via type approval. one of which is the emissions limits.

The EEU set the rules,we reluctantly abide by them

true, but the government enforces them. they could refuse (and i believe have that option on such things) and its OUR government that has to fund such things also, IIRC

I suppose it depends on how seriously one takes the particulates debate

no conflict of interest there then!

and as nissan use renault engines, and MB use some renault engines, id say its a pretty safe bet that the software to run these renault engines is all pretty much the same, so will affect anyone that uses renault engines! just as the VW thing affects everyone using VW engines, etc
