I am looking for a good W123 - Either a saloon or Coupe, ideally a late model. Watching the web-based auction sites, I am having difficulty valuing these cars!!

I appreciate that the value will always be "as much as the buyer is willing to pay...", but can anyone on here point me in the right direction for a reliable prices guide?

OR

If you know of a good late model 230E 230CE or 280CE - Get in touch!!

I will not waste anyones time, but I am fussy and want a good car!

Cheers!

If you don't desparately need the coupé, just go for the saloon. The coupe is inevitably less practical and more expensive. You should be able to pick up a really good 280E, for £1000.

Since they fall between secondhand cars (Parkers starts at 1989 models) and classic cars (Practical Classics only lists the W123 coupe, not the W123 saloon) then they would be valued by the trade as 'bangers', no matter how good they are!

Why not try Auto Trader national search, eg for 280E. Or ebay. Bear in mind, if you are using ebay to try value a car, you need to ignore overpriced "hopefuls" which receive 0 bids, or non-runners, etc.

A beautiful *mint* garaged 1 owner 1985 W123 280CE with full MBSH and less than 50K miles went on eBay for over £5,000: another went for £4,500.

Earlier in the year I also saw on eBay another *mint* 1 owner 230TE 1985 W123 with 80,000 miles go for £3,600.

An average condition 230CE W123 is worth upto £1000; a dog non runner is worth peanuts--no more than £300 but it is surprising what people will pay as the new parts are very expensive but very high quality.

Note that a 1977 230C (not CE) is very rare: only around 1,200 RHD were made for the UK (then the CE was introduced) and there are fewer that 80 left as rust prevention was not too good then: saw a tatty one on eBay for £150 and it did not sell. I would have bought it but I already have three W123's and my wife is not too happy about the lack of space in the garage!!

Rare as they are, I'd not value a 230C over a 230CE. Different engines/models within a range, or colours, or options fitted, simply don't realise any extra value when it comes to selling again. The exception, is when a rare higher spec exists, for example a W124 500E; or a Mk1 Golf GTi. In any case, remember that a 230C is the inferior, carburettor'd, version, with less power.

Thanks for your help!

I just missed out on a 80k miles high-spec mint '85 230E (ebay) going for £3k.

Also an '85 280CE 1-owner car for over £5k.

I guess I need to keep looking - I want a good car to start with, not one i have to work on...

Cheers!

230ce

@ Flip.
If you are looking for a project, then I have a silver 230ce 1985 that has been off the road for a year for not much money. Superficial rust on wheel arches and the motor is very good. Let me know.
