Hi All,

Looking at a 240d from 1983. All seems well but have a question about cooling. Top hose gets hot, top inch of radiator gets hot, but rest of rad and bottom hose through to thermostat remains cold. Have been out in the car and left it running while stationary for 15 mins. Temp guage never went over 80 and rad never got hot.

Owner has just called me to say thermostat opens progressively so only small amounts of water pass through the cooling system hence rad doesn't get really hot.

Does this seem right? I'm surprised rad did not get hot.

Thanks,
Eric

If it were mine I would take off the hoses and back flush the rad just to make sure that the rad is not silted up.

Just been talking to eric on the phone, and I think this is one for Hibbo, so I hope you do not mind young man, or any other 123 diesel owner

Hi y'all, been away camping again so sorry for the lateness of my relpy.

When I first looked at my w123 300D, the temp (and fuel) gauge were dodgy, so I was concerned that it might be overheating. The top hose was hot and the most of the rad and rest of the system cold. I squished the top hose and felt the bottom hose pulse. I fixed the temp gauge and it's never been over 90c.

So I think the slightly less rambling answer to your question is: The car's cooling system is perfectly normal.

Buy it! :D
