I apologise for lots of questions from a newbie but I'm totally new to Mercs and wanting to get good, reliable information from you guys.

For the last week or so, my 1991 W124 200TE has been making odd (worrying) noises from the front drivers side wheel. The backstreet garage who've been looking after the car for years say it's just a noisy old car - I don't take that approach and would prefer to put whatever is wrong, right.

It's only been happening for a week or so and I've been unable to find anything poking my head around under the wheel arch and underneath. It occurs on uneven road surfaces / potholes and most specifically where bumps are uneven - so if you go over a speedbump you don't tend to get a noise, but a pothole on the passenger side will cause it to happen. It's a metallic clonking kind of noise.

Now. Interestingly, this evening I got home and stuck my head into the wheel arch again to try and see if anything was obviously loose when I spotted something on the protective tray under the engine - I reached in and pulled it out and found the following. Some kind of rubber bush which has split off. I don't know if it is related but it seems like quite a coincidence.

Can anyone ID it and does it seem likely to be related? Is it an anti-roll bar bush or something? Could that be causing my noise? It's about the size of a shot glass if anyone needs an idea of scale!

Thanks.

When removing the bolts, if they are tight, undo one 2 turns, spray some WD40 in and do it up again, then it should come out easily

When you fit them make sure the suspension is loaded with the weight of the car as the clamps are bolted tight, place blocks under the outer ball joints and lower the car onto them. The M8 nuts and bolts are best replaced ask the dealer for a set. If you are very flexible (physicaly) the whole job can be done without lifting the car at all.

I'm in my late 20's and not overweight - and ground clearance looks pretty good so I reckon I might be able to get away without lifting the car then which is a bonus :)

Cheers guys :)
