I HVE A BLOWN REAR BOX, AND AM HVING TROUBLE LOCATING A REPLACEMENT.

CAN ANY ONE HELP - IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE EXHAUST SYSTEMS ON THE SALON, ESTATE AND COUPE - IE ARE THEY INTERCHANGEABLE?

IS THERE AN AFTERMARKET EXHAUST AVAIL. ?

MANY THKS IN ADVANCE

The coupe has a slightly shorter wheelbase than both the Estate and saloon so yes the systems are different.

Unfortunately, the mid and tail box on mine were from quickfit when I bought the car and I dont like them at all. The exhaust resonates above a certain rev range.

Personally, I am seriously thinking of buying a genuine exhaust in order to get the car back to its former silent running.

Many thks yours spike

kwik fit have just quoted £234 for the rear box only!!!! so I'm not sure i can bring myself to get a price from mercedes.

just out of interest, does anyone know if there is any difference in the rear box, between a 220 coupe and say a320 - apart from having two tail pipes?

The genuine MB replacement exhaust sections for my W124 estate cost significantly less from the MB dealer than prices quoted from all the national exhaust centres.

Your exhaust resonates because it is badly fitted, not because of the exhaust itself.

If you undo all the clamps holding the exhaust and tap it with a soft mallet, it will settle the system onto the hangers evenly. You will then not have the resonance. Ensure the exhaust is 25mm away from the body at all points, otherwise it may boom.

The well known tyre / exhaust centre you refer to are not called SH*t FIT for nothing.

many thanks to you all

i hve just been down to kwik fit and they reckon they can supply and fit a genuine merc rear box for £218.60, local merc dealer ship is quote 250 - is it worth the extra ? - p.s getting desperate as rear box fell off on the way back from kwik fit.

partco - do not list this system

thks spike for the boyracer style exhaust, but sadly not for me!

Hi Ahj

If the difference is so little (are they comparable quotes including ALL parts labour and VAT) I would go to the dealer for the extra £30.

I had a s***fit type do an exhaust on my motor about 4years back and they did not clamp it correctly at gearbox and 'ditched the fittings. By the time I noticed (exhaust noise) and took it back they denied all knowledge.
I was angry but they were much bigger than me - dealer sorted it for me very reasonably too.

Just my opinion though - its your 30 odd quid!

DON'T DON'T DON'T DON'T DON'T DO IT

Do not go to kwik fit.

Get a genuine from ECP or KMS

But leave well alone kwik fit.

I doubt very much they will fit a genuine box.

Ignore at the expense of your pocket.
