w124 220ce torque settings Front W/B's

MOT mentioned play in NSF and OSF wheel bearings - not enough to fail but suggested I tighten them. I assume it's straightforward (ex Saab enthusiast), what should the torque settings be?

If they are taper bearings you do them up, then back off till the wheels run smooth and you cant feel the bearings.

Mike,

You will note in the Haynes manual that it suggests doing them up to a specific torque - but they don't say anywhere what that torque should be!!! I consulted the service manager at MB Leicester some time ago who scoffed at the thought that anyone could adjust a wheel bearing (arogant git) and I eventually coaxed the info that they do it up finger tight!!!??? - Perhaps you have to be a specified build to work in an MB workshop so that there is some consistancy in 'finger tight'

Anyway, enough from Victor M, the way I've done it on my W124 is to:
1) loosen the pinch bolt on the nut and slacken off to relieve the set position.
2) tighten the nut until firm to seat the bearing.
3) back off the nut until the wheel spins freely without resistance. If you can't tell about the free play then remove the brake pads temporarily.
4) tighten the pinch bolt to around no more than 8lbft. Its only there to stop rotation.

Don't worry about having a slack bearing (within limits of course!) as it is better to be slightly slack than slightly firm :)rolleyes: hmm! who does that apply to?). Check the wheel both before and after to test the bearing as you don't want it to be worse than when you started.

Thanks for the info. Whilst I was under the car having a general rummage before the MOT I noticed a slight split in the centre box. Have put it in to a local classic car specialist who looks after a couple of 124 coupes and asked him to check the F wheels when he does the exhaust. Certainly the steering as it it is is spot on so maybe best left.
