Hi, hope you can help.
I have an increasingly noisy tappet. At the garage they put in some additive and asked me to motor for 500 miles. I've done that but it's still there.
is it worth repeating the treatment? Do I have to get the full set of tappets replaced as one garage has suggested?
I just need some ideas.
Thanks
Dave

In my opinion all the motor industry pills and potions are a gimmick and I have no faith in them whatsoever. The only thing I have used which has worked was years ago on a Toyota Hilux. Had to do and engine oil and filter change, took the sump plug out and it was coming out like treacle! Fitted it with a cheap oil filter and ran some flushing oil through for an hour at idle, it did the trick and off it went...

I would think you would be better off replacing your tappets in all honesty and having the oil and filter changed.

Is it a dull tap or a loud click/tap and does it disappear anytime. if the latter just a tappet as mentioned but if dull tap, check camshaft lobes asap, as they square off and hammer the vavle, poss causing the valve head to snap off. :(

type of tapping

Hello Stat,
It is a loud tap, but is much quieter when idling but gets really loud when I accelerate and is especially loud when labouring up hill.
I also seem to be losing power a bit. Not sure if that is connected.
If I do need to replace all the tappets how big a job is it?
Thanks
Dave

Not a big job, along as you have a reasonable tool kit with a torque wrench. remove rocker cover and then rockers/cam bearing covers. mark which way they come off and do them one at a time so the chain tensioner doesn't pop out. watch out for little shim on top of valve. |Then "push" tappets out noting which way shim is and push new tappets in. refit.

Loved the use of the word "refit" at the end! I suspect the reality will take longer than the terse description implies?

It is the taking down that takes the time, when bolts shear off, studs break, you have no tools that fit anything. Putting back is easier

But what do you do with the left overs Malcolm?

It all depends on if the car has been driven, if it has you will not need them as the parts will have dropped off and be lost
