Hello all,
Just wondered if anyone might be able to shed some light on an intermittent engine fault on my mercedes W124 280E Estate 1995

The fault has happened several times now always in the same driving conditions which are the following:

Coming off a higher speed run, say on a motorway or A road and then sitting in queing traffic inching forward stopping, inching forward stopping. When I go to accelerate away when the traffic queue clears the revs increase before cutting out to a tickover. and the engine will only rev to approx 1600rpm before dying back to 700 revs suddenly. If you apply pressure on the accelerator it will again rev to approx 1600rpm then cut out back to tickover again. It does this until you creep along for a couple of miles at about 10mph and then suddenly engine has full power again which seems to coincide with a drop in engine temperature and air passing through the engine. Engine temperature when its happened has been around 96 so relatively normal for queing traffic in the summer??

I have replaced the air mass meter and the O2 sensor and the engine coolant was brand new in April and it hasnt seemed to clear the problem. I hooked the car up to a "star machine" and it indicated llamda sensor warnings but I had the CAT and emissions tested and they were all normal so im at a bit of a loss.

It feels like it is air fuel mixture or fuel starvation. Im not sure if its related but the car will not change up from 2nd to 3rd gear from cold for about 1/4mile when you first begin a journey. i read this was a catalytic converter warming proceedure commomn to W124's on the web but I not sure.

Any advice anyone has woud be much appreciated.

many thanks BEN

This almost sound like an open circuit track in the throttle body

Main engine Wiring Loom

just an update on the engine problem outlined earlier in this thread. Have identified the issue back to the wiring leading to the Engine Coolant temperature sensor being cracked and shorting. I ordered a new sensor and plugs and started pairing back the wires to make the replacement only to discover to my horror that the entire loom is suffering from cracks in the wiring insulation and shorts in the electrical circuit as a result. Having read about the wiring on W124's this seems to be a relatively common issue of cars this age and seems to be caused by proximity to the engine and heat cracking the insulation over time.

Have ordered a new one today from Mercedes £653+VAt Gulp! Feel its better to repair the whole loom than be chasing /insulating cracked sections.

Hi All
So after 6 months of trouble free driving the same problem has returned. My E280 is revving to 1500 revs then dies to 600rpm tickover when I try to pull away after sitting in traffic jams or heavy crawling traffic. Engine temp is always around 100deg when this happens so far i have replaced the following

Air mass meter
02 sensor
Coolant Temperature sensor
Entire engine wiring loom

Im at a bit of a loss does anyone have any ideas what this intermittent problem could be

Many thanks in advance. BEN J

Could be a problem with the electronic throttle sender unit or its cable--- if you have an electronic throttle.

If you've seen 100 degree temperatures in East Sussex in the last couple of days I suspect something's running hot or reading wrong

Running hot on these cars is normally caused by a bad viscous fan, a partially blocked radiator, running the aircon on a hot day while the car is sitting in traffic or a combination of all three. IIRC there are two temperature sensors

I'd try unplugging the MAF and see if that makes any difference

Hi nick
When you say unplugging the MAF do you mean leaving it unplugged whilst driving or just to test for the problem. I have tried to replicate the problem while the car is stationary but it never does it.
cheers BEN
