I tested one over the weekend, drove not even 10 miles and when I opened the bonnet to check the fluid levels noticed it was very hot (made me sweat just leaning over it). The car was cold when we started it.

Has anyone got a 124 series with a 300 engine? If so, can you confirm it gets very hot even after a short while too?

I've had 6cylinder engined cars in the past and recall they do get very hot quickly, maybe having had 4cyls for a while I am not used to this anymore?

Thanks for that.

Looking in the expansion reservoir the fluid was a clear light blue and I didn't see any residues in there.

By the way, not sure about the 2nd fan on your car, but I am 99% certain that one fan (the right one as you look towards the engine) is related to the a/c. My potential 300 has no aircon and thus no fan, another ex-potential one had both a/c and 1 fan. I can send you pics if you'd like.

At any rate, the heat was emanated from the engine block, the temp on the gauge seemed ok instead.

It would be easy to take one fan out. I was considering doing this as it blocks the air flow and I have yet to get the fans to switch on.

The Dia air con is shown with two fans in all the bits I can find about it, I'm not sure how many fans the official MB air con has.

Stick your finger into the expansion tank and run it around to see if there is any beige coloured gunge.
