Looks like I need a new exhaust for my old 300E, downpipes and mid-section.

Question is, what type?

Anyone got any experience of stainless, German & Swedish, Eurocarparts?

I want it quiet, don't want noise and more power, so is a genuine MB one the only choice?

Any feedback appreciated, I don't want to spend loads of money on an exhaust that is noisy or doesn't last.

Thanks,

Richard

I'd give some general advice and say, go to 3 or so 'quick fit' style garages, in your local area and ask them to look at it and give you a quote. Whilst you could probably save a couple of quid by doing it yourself, exhaust system is one of those jobs, where having access to a ramp makes a difficult job, a lot easier/quicker. Also there is plenty of competition between the firms, so this should keep the cost down.

The garages would have a number of exhaust suppliers to choose from (so that they can cover most/all makes and models) so they might be able to offer different prices for different qualities of exhaust. I have no idea if my exhaust is OEM but its quiet enough. Since its not a safety-critical part, I am not too bothered on the quality, so long as it lasts a reasonable time.

the 300e has twin downpipes and is not cheap (genuine around £200 + vat)
that said i bet he one on your car is the original so the quality is excellent and will last a long time if you intend to keep the car

Well, it's going to hurt, but genuine parts are on the way.

I can't stand noisy exhausts, so it has to be quiet and it has to be quality.

About 220 +vat for front pipes, 100 + vat for mid box, and about another 40 + vat for various brackets and fitting kit.

I just hope the old girl appreciates it.

For anyone who ever has a doubt about which exhaust to fit.

Fit the genuine article, it looks good, it sounds good, it doesn't do your pocket much good ;-) but I don't regret a penny of it.

Just got it back, almost silent, purrs like a kitten.
