Hi all. I have just been offered a 4 matic estate for good money but as I do a lot of miles (mostly motorway) I would like to have an idea on expected fuel consumpition.
Am I right in thinking it's a 3L engine as well? I do know it's petrol.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Stu

I think most people recommend against buying 4Matics because the 4WD system has a habit of failing expensively

They have a 3-litre engine, possibly the least economical ever in a W124. Some people say they get mid-20s or better, but in my experience 300s struggle to make 20 mpg, particularly in town

Fantastic smooth engine, though, and a smooth car all round. Just not one I'd recommend

I owned a 300TE for 12 years and found the car very reliable and well built, but eventually sold it because of the fuel consumption and age, it was an 88 reg.

It was a big heavy car and the consumption ranged from 20 ish around town (20 or just below in this weather) to 27 best. I would imagine that the 4-matic would give slightly worse figures because of the weight of the extra diff etc.

As bolide says they are more complicated and expensive to repair and a lot of people don't consider them a good second hand buy. I considered buying one at the time but came to the same conclusions as above.

Hope this helps!

Thanks guys this helps a lot and has made my mind up for me. I'm going to go for a 190 instead.

I have the chioce of a 93 manual 2.5 diesel in navy, (I have no other details on it yet), or an 89 2.0 petrol again in blue. It is an auto, has covered 150000 miles but has had the top end rebuilt along with the driveshaft. New radiator and a full vallet. It's mot'd to may next year.

The petrol one is supposed to be very clean but my main concern is miles to the gallon so I'm hedging towards the diesel.

if economy is a concern then definitely go diesel with a 190. that 2.5 motor is very frugal, acceptably powerful, and will run for ever. as regards mpg, i used to have a 2.0 diesel 190, and best i ever saw was 70mpg.

no, seriously.
