Hi all,

No major posts for a while, because I've had no issues with the car for a good 4-5k miles.

Could any members, though, advise as to whether I should take action on the following:

On Wednesday 30/12/15 on a short local trip, I experienced what appeared to noticeable slippage in the gearing and the car kept feeling like it was in neutral when pulling away. This manifested itself over the course of a 4 to 5 mile round trip.

I called Autodeutsche in Camden and had the car booked in for today for a check over. The car has done 158k miles.

That apparent problem with the gearbox seems to have been an isolated incident on the day, because afterwards I switched the gear shift setting to the ’S’ (sport) mode, and the slippage at pulling away stopped immediately. After a day or so, I switched back to ‘E’ (economy) and since that first switch to ’S’ the box seems to have worked fine. This has included a trip down to East Kent coast and back yesterday, a round trip of 160 miles. Smooth changes and kick down all fine etc...

I am wondering whether it may all have been down to the stick not being in quite the correct place in the shifter? Basically, whatever it was, it seems to have been a one-off problem on one day/trip and not, apparently, an ongoing problem. I have done over 300 miles since with no symptoms.

I have deferred the visit to the workshop, and have another longish trip tomorrow (to Bristol and back), a round trip of 250 miles, so I will see how I get on over the next couple of days.

If anyone, though, has specific knowledge of this symptom, and why it might initially only be an isolated occurrence, I'd appreciate a heads up. I have read that the 4-speed boxes can require reconditioning at around this level of mileage. I have an estimate of £1-1.5k all-in for this.

Cheers, n Happy New Year!

How's the fluid level and when was the last time the fluid and filter were changed? Does the fluid have a burnt smell and look black?

^^ This. Dunno if someone accidentally knocking the S/E switch* 'between' positions could explain things but if the level is at the lower end of OK and it was a cold day (+ short trip so car doesn't get to warm up properly) the one time slipping could be as simple as needing a top up. Or fresh ATF & filter if you don't when it was last done

* standard or economy [/pedantic]

Yes, I think I'd check level, condition and if all ok on that front just keep an eye on things and hope it doesn't happen again.
Maybe a (guaranteed) used autobox might work out cheaper, assuming a new / recon box is ever needed. Obviously the correct one needs to be found.

Gearbox oil and flush will cost circa £150 and it might cure the problem if it hasn't been changed for a while. If it doesn't solve the problem I'm with you on fitting a recon unit at that mileage

I have a gbox for your car, excellent condition, 75.00. Hope this helps

Sorry for delayed response. Car has been working 100% perfect for months, so I've been off the forum for a while.

Thanks for the offer! I'm good at the moment.
