Hi, after really hard shift to 5th gear transmission sounded like broken wheel bearing. After some km's it stopped but suddenly it started to loose 5th and 4th gear so I drove on 3rd, then it lost 3rd gear so I got home on 2nd. When parking there was problem with R as it would not engage. Next day after startup there was no problem with engaging gears but only for few minutes. Then it lost all gears completely so now it wont move. I've checked oil level and there is enough of it and it's clean, no smell.

Any advice what could be wrong?

One more detail. Transmission was working properly (except noise in 5th) for another 300 km. Only after that it started to loose gears.

It is but you will need the 12volt supply for the 5th gear solenoid

You should know the following:

Whilst some people feel the 5 speed box is superior, it does come with a LOWER differential ratio (which for me takes away the advantage of that higher overdrive 5 gear) and people never seem to mention this (perhaps they do not know).

I am talking European cars here not USA models.

So, if you fit the 4 speed box you will have a drivetrain combination which will give you better acceleration but less good fuel economy when cruising in top gear.

You should find the higher geared diff to go with the 4 speed box.

5 speed auto diff is 1:3.69

4 speed auto diff is 1: 3.27

None at the monent, but there's an OM642 in the Jeep Grand Cherokee!
David,

Is the overall gearing 'longer' for the 5-spd models?

One gripe I have with the 280E is the short gearing. My Vol*o S80 Auto is geared somewhere around 30mph/1000rpm in top (5th), despite having nearly 30BHP less.

Kth286 and S80's post are very valid, these cars are are high geared anyway with out making it worse,,I forgot about that side of things
