Robert, Your car does look & sound nice. For that price it has to be a good deal and something I would be far more comfortable with than 10k. Personally I would prefer silver or beryl blue. However, I might get back to you after I've seen the other 320 today. I'm in Portsmouth though and you are a distance away.

Regards,

Paul

The price you have been quoted is very high. It would have to be a minter with FSH and low mileage to warrant that price. I've got a very nice 1995 320 coupe which I have put up for sale due to retirement. You can check the advert out at http://www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk/classic-car-page.php/carno/87340 if you are interested. It's a nice car with a high spec and drives like a dream.

It is now 3750 from 4995 which was also a reduction ?

What was the original asking price please ?

What is the car colour ? I could not see it stated.

To all those who may be interested, and mentioning no names of course, my wife felt uncomfortable with the seller after about a minute. It took me a bit longer - about 20 minutes. It is my firm belief, after the advice I have received, the car is indeed overpriced. I did get to drive it, and liked it - a lot. The seller didn't really want me to take it out because I did not seem serious in buying it. I'm sorry, but that sort of response from someone selling any car annoys me intensely. I could go on but will leave it there. If I'm going to have a Merc for everyday use, I will consider something a bit newer - maybe a diesel 270 CLK (a galvanised one from '04 onwards??). The classic Merc may have to wait a bit longer.

http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=69872&highlight=galvanised.

This thread was started at the above link. I can't seem to be able to quote a message in this reply as the box is greyed out and so this option is not working (not sure if I'm doing anything wrong) but if you cut and paste the link above into your browser it should work. I can't understand why you can't see the other traffic within this thread..?

I just say 'mentioning no names' for reasons I thought were crystal clear - the person concerned is a dealer and I am not getting into the why's and wherefore's of how the whole test drive thing went within this sort of medium. Suffice to say I am sure that with the information posted in other parts of this thread and a little detective work it can be worked out who precisely has the car for sale. :)

If I had a driveway and/or garage then yes...I wouldn't really have much hesitation in buying a 124 and keeping the Golf. But I have neither. So, when it comes to getting rid of the Golf, which may be sooner rather than later (a decision foisted upon me by circumstances I won't go into here - v long story) I will definitely look at an 04 - onwards CLK 270 diesel. Decent ones seem to be out there, and there's plenty of threads within this forum to have a look at to arrive at an informed choice. If purchased it will be my first Mercedes and I hope the association will be a long and happy one.

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
Ten grand for a W124? Unless it is mint its worth nowhere near that.

You could buy a W211 for that price, in every respect a far superior car.

W124's are now old cars and good low mileage W124 Coupes are considered classic cars that are sort after and worth money!

Having seen a recent specialists advertise good mileage Coupes for 7-10k plus and a recent sale of a N plate 51k Sportline for £14k there must be a market for a classic Merc's!

Alfa 105 Coupes and Spiders are 15-20k, Ford Mk1/Mk2 RS Escorts are 20k, E30 M3's are 20k so in theory 7-14k for last of the old school Mercedes Coupe is relatively good value?

Would you get the same sense of satisfaction and solid feel with a new Merc? When I sit in my colleagues 09 plate CLK I compare the build to my wife's Golf GTI and not my Coupe?

the trouble is that a lot of us on the forum are used to cars which are in less than
"very good condition" and "original".

The older cars owned by forum members are often a work in progress and the members are doing their own refurbishments on a DIY basis and often use copy parts.

There is a large group of people out there that can afford to have a proper condition classic style car, and without wanting to get involved with it on a DIY basis, and are therefore not forum members looking for knowledge and info to get the best prices for parts and techniques for doing the actual work.

This group of people (with good disposable income) is the target market for the sellers of first class, good condition, original, classic style Mercedes cars.

This is Charles Ironside territory.

The owner of the classic will then typically take it to classy Merc specialist such as John Hayes at Goring-By-Sea (West Sussex) to look after it over the future years.

If you were to buy a typical (124) 320 Coupe and wanted to bring it to the standard of a good condition original car, you would need to spend several thousand pounds to do so,
therefore the market value of these good condition original cars must be correctly priced at around the 7 - 10k mark including a comprehensive warranty.
