Hi,

I have a W124 300Touring Diesel.

It's starting to feel a little rough on uneven roads so I guess some bushes need renewing, front and back.

Can anybody point me to an exploded diagram of the suspension components with all the bits listed in English so I can have a look under and determine what needs replacing and ring around a few places for some quotes?

I am aware of that Russian site but I haven't been able to see an English version of it.

Thanks!

How many miles has the car done?

There are lots of possible things to replace. I'd have the car inspected by an expert & then prioritise the work

I'd start with the front ARB bushes - they're less than £20 / set so do them first. If the car has more than about 170k on it I'd be very suspicious of the front ball joints. If it's up near 200k I'd think about replacing the rear suspension spheres. If it thumps from the back over drain covers the leading rear subframe bushes are worn

If the tyres are more than about 3 years old they will be fairly hard. A set of new tyres can work wonders for the ride

Thanks!

The car has 220k on her!!!

I think the ARB were done before.

The car doesn't thump so much.... it's more that bad road surfaces cause alot of droning/vibrations.

There is play in the steering wheel with the engine off. With the engine on it mostly goes... and yet you can feel a looseness when driving on uneven surfaces.

As I said, 220K and a bit rough around the edges... I will be putting the car over a pit this weekend and would like to be able to identify what's worn and then get an idea of what's involved in fixing her up.

Well check the sub frame bushes mainly the front ones on each sub frame, both front and rear, best checked with an iron bar for any movement.

The steering free play is only checked with the engine running and the wheels straight ahead 22-25mm free play max measured at the steering wheel

Droning/vibrations you say. Don't rule out wheel bearings.

Some of the steering vagueness was fixed by repairing a drivers front wheel bearing.

However, alot of the bushes just look a bit worn. There is alot of harshness on uneven roads.

The last MOT said the inner wishbone bushes looked shot but they couldn't induce any play in them.

Can somebody help me with this again?

The car is going in for MOT on Wed. I suspect it will fail at least on inner wishbone bushes. The car is a 1992 300 TD (non turbo estate).

Will I need to buy full replacement wishbones or will I be able to get a kit/bushes?

I'm finding it very hard to use tha detali site!

FYI VIN: WDB1241902F217470

The bushes are available in a repair kit from Mercedes. In fact most of the wearing parts are available in kits which include new bolts, nuts, washers & etc

The wishbone bolts can corode into the bush sleeves making it a sod of job.Give the A/R/bar bush nuts a good soaking with penetrating oil too.
