Time for an upgrade on the standard blaupunkts. Before I start pulling things to pieces, I'd like to have the replacements to put straight in. Can anyone tell me the sizes of the fronts either size of the dash, and the rears on the shelf ?

Thanks,

Mike

PS. Anyone know how to turn the immobiliser off with the key fob when inside the car ? I assume this is a stupid question to most of you - but at least it'll keep you amused !!

If the coupe is the same as the saloon they are non standard speakers and fit with clips rather than screws. Custom fit speakers are available from Rainbow (German). Their website address is http://www.rainbow-car-audio.de/. Don't know if anyone else still makes custom fit for the W124 certainly none of the mainstream Japanese makes (Sony, Alpine, Pioneer etc) do

There's a bit more information on a recent post on the general questions forum "new owner with a few questions" last post on 16 November. Otherwise it would appear that you'll have to resort to butchery to get non-custom ones in! :?

The Rainbow IQ line is a great upgrade solution.
I found front and back w124 speakers online at www.iqcaraudio.com.

SPEAKERS

I changed my front speakers on my 93CE. The only ones that would fit properly were Blakpunt twins. They have the tweeter on front of the main speaker. I am prety sure that these became standard in the later EClass. I considered trying to adapt other brands but after my local motor factors let me see other types to see if they would fit. These Blackpunt were made especially for W124's. They were very tight when I changed them from a my saloon to my coupe, but they fit, and the sound is hugely improved. I will look in the atic to see if I can find the box, i think I put the old speakers in it.

GOT THE CODE

HERE IS WHAT IS WRITTEN ON THE BOX

BLAUPUNKT CAR magic

Car-Specific Coax-System 80W

.......... FRONT.................................. BACK

Mercedes (w124) Lim.......................... Mercedes (w124) Lim
(s124) Stationwagon
(c124) Coupe................................... (c124) Coupe
(a124) Cabriolet

204

7 606 204 000

These speaker are not that cheap, but they are good for 80w each. They weigh about 3 times the original or more. For the back I bought spurious ones and adapted them.

With a little trimming (of the metal and the dash), I persuaded Alpine 5 1/4" component speakers to fit into the 5" hole; and get the covers back on properly. The desire to do this, was driven by the car stereo dealers very knowledgable advice: while you want bass in the back, ideally you want bass at the front too! And treble at the front. Treble is not so important at the back. So, my car has the 5 1/4 in the dash, 6½" in the rear doors and 4 tweeters in the roof (just behind sun visor and just next to B pillar), pointing directly at your ears.

the cheap way

I had the same problem and went to the scrappy! after many goes and woes i found that the door spears in an audi 80 or 100 would fit. they are made by nokia and are rated at 150w and sound great. The cost £5 bargain! good luck!
