HELP!! The rear differential has been whining on my 5spd 91 230TE for a while, but I could live with it. It has suddenly started rumbling badly in any gear over 30mph, especially when accelerating. Assuming the 'diff is the problem, anyone know where I can get it rebuilt / sorted in Sussex (I live nr Brighton)?? I've heard a rebuild could cost £550 - is a secondhand diff an option?? Would REALLY appreciate any advice asap as I need the car every day[/b]

A second hand diff would be a good option cost roughly £100-£150, but before you go down that road check the prop shaft as they are bad for the rubber couplings going on them may even be the centre bearing of the prop shaft.

rumbling

Its also worth checking the CV joints on the driveshafts as well, as they tend to rumble when they go.

Mercman in Southampton can supply a secondhand diff (speak to Chris or Ricky on 02380 784444) and this'll probably be a more convenient way of solving the problem than a rebuild

Contact me direct and I can suggest some local people to do the swop for you

Of course a quick inspection before buying a new diff would be a good idea...
