I just bought a W124 220 7 seater. The diff was slightly noisy, which I expected. On the way home it dumped it's oil and I kept driving it. It sounded like a hammer drill in masonry :(

Anyway, I've located 2 units in Prestige Allparts and Dronsfields. I've never bought major items at a breaker before. Can they been trusted?

It's just that I asked what cars they came from and was told one had 75k on it and the other only 45k! It just seems to good to be true although at 20% the cost of a new one........

Not really,as Malcolm said,there isn't much demand.
I recently paid £85 inc delivery for a second hand Land Rover rear differential which is now fitted and working perfectly.
List price...£600!!

Regards,
Nick.

OK thanks.

Another Q.... the car has ABS. Does that affect the differential I pick or will it just slot into whatever ABS components I have?

There may be just the one in the diff,,the hole will be there anyway

Yes it can make a difference as some 124 came with ASR which uses two sensors and maybe in different positions on the diff.

You actually need the part number of your own diff and the part number of the diff you are buying to really see what's what.

also input and output flange sizes may vary, and ratio may vary. part number is the ideal way of matching.

All later 124 models have ABS. It was an option but became standard around '86.

ABS 1:3.27

or

A 124 350 73 14 HOUSING

do you have abs and asd, or just abs? there will be an asd warning light on the dash to the r/h/s if fitted.

I don't think I have ASD. I'm not familiar with the dash yet and amn't close to it.

But I suppose my question is.... would somebody in a breakers who has pulled a differential assembly have one of those part numbers to hand, or do I need to find a different part number?

those are THE part numbers. any breaker will definately have the right one/ they are sure its`s the right one/ probably the right one/ will definately fit/ might need simple modification but easy done/ fairly easily done etc etc. the part number is stamped onto the machined face at the rear of the housing at the bottom right corner, along with the ratio. cast numbers on the side of the housing will not do.

OK thanks.

I asked the breaker to tell me the part number he had and it matched the BAS only one. He also said he used my VIN to check I had ABS only, which I do, as I checked my dash.

So I guess I can trust him. Although he could just repeat back the part number I want after looking up my VIN I guess!!!

I'm getting close to ordering a differential. I've found a good deal on one with 98k miles on it. Can somebody please help me out by checking if the following car had ABS or ABS/ASD?

I don't have ASD. The part I'm asking for now is the one in the breakers. I just want to be sure that the car it came from was ABS only. Thanks.
