Hi , I am confused by conflicting advice from mechanics about the suitable grade engine oil for a W124 E200 1994 200kmiles, head gasket replaced at 170k miles.
Any advice to keep the old girl running would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Len.

Millers Oils have something but I'm sorry that I can't remember what it was. I asked them for a recommended oil for a 280 M104 engine and used it until I sold it several years later. Never used any oil between changes whilst I used it.

Thank you for your replies, just checked them out and they recommend the same as the book, I'm not sure to what extent they factor in the age and high mileage.

What have the mechanics told you?
What are you struggling with, brand or grade?
What’s wrong with the current oil you are using?

I don’t know the oil spec for your car however, I run a 1995 Uk Supra and a 1997 S70R which are bombproof, engine internals look new, don’t smoke, don’t use oil, don’t leak and laugh at any new stuff I get and trade. So I know a thing or two about good oils and how to make good things last. My preferred brands are Valvoline and Gulf on these older cars. I use 5w40 and 5w50 on them, the oils are current, not specific to older engines etc. I’d happily use Castrol’s current magnatec range on similar vintage cars (provided the right spec is available). Change it out yearly or every 5k. I’ve had inconsistent results with Mobil as they change their formulas quite often and a few other oils like MOTUL, Shell Helix i thought I’d try but, my cars are very sensitive and expressed their displeasure at these oils so they were changed out within 100 miles and back on Valvoline or Gulf.

Good oil, changed frequently, the finest fuel are two fundamental things to ensuring longevity and performance.

My dear old W124 was mobil 1 0w-40. Had a big sticker on the cross member. Had the car from new.
Rust and my lack of car noose at the time led me to get rid. Worst decision ever in hindsight.
Engine was mint and not even worn in at 120k miles.

I wouldn’t change from what you’ve been using not a big fan of mixing different viscosity oils, if you must go for the same oil but a grade thicker

Many thanks, my confusion was that I was told to use something for old engines rather than manufacturers specification. But the info above is useful, many thanks.

Always take what mechanics say with a pinch of salt. If your car is running well with no issues, keep doing what you are!

Pleased you got sorted with your oil, but its what oil all the other owners put in the engine will really decide its life.
As others have said regular oil changes is the real key.

Correct oil and regular changes is getting more important than ever - especially with “wet” timing belts - incorrect oil and late oil changes are killing those engines left, right and centre…

A friend of mine had a Ford EcoBoost engine fail at 60K miles, belt failed.
End result new engine & gearbox.

That’s one of the worst for it

I used this one, LIQUI MOLY MoS2 LEICHTLAUF 10W-40 PART SYNTHETIC ENGINE OIL, its been about 2 weeks, my daily commute is about 16miles, still sounding fine, happy celebrations as she has just clocked 200K .
