I have just been to see a '94 L reg E220 estate. It has done 116K miles, has good service history and generally is in good condition:). However, it has quite bad corrosion under the windscreen wash bottle situated by the inside wing on the offside:(. Is this simply a cosmetic repair or is the area important structurally? The dealer has said this will be repaired with a patch plate.

Any advice appreciated.

I've seen that on other W124s. You also sometimes see rust where the chassis rails meet the front panel. It's caused by water sitting on broken paint or unpainted bolt holes - eventually it will rust through

If it's repaired properly it shouldn't be a problem

Had this on my W123 - caused by blocked drain holes under the headlamp wiper motors. My garage welded in new plates as this area is an MOT failure as it's next to the chassis rail. Cost about £300 if I recall. Some of the cost is due to having to remove the bumper, headlights etc - if you did this yourself you could get it down a bit.

Yes , this is quite common .

If you're at all handy , you can buy a MIG welder for £150 or less and do the job yourself . Then you've always got the welder for any future work required . It's a big saving in the long run . I got a Clarke model from Machine Mart which can be used either with or without gas to work on the Fintail - also handy for MOT work on the newer cars .

You can run up to about a 130A welder off a normal domestic 13A power outlet - this will weld metal up to about 5mm thick - fine for car body panels .
