Does it look like this? If so then it's a Brake Band Reaction Pin, falls off apparently when your brake band breaks. Bad news. :(

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
You may want to ask on the Peachparts forum (google it). Lots of people there have DIY experience of replacing gearbox valves and pistons.

Yes it is the brake band reaction pin. I think it's time to lay this car to rest as I dont think it will be worth while fixing. It will probably cost me more than I paid for it. I am looking at buying a 1989 w126 which has an engine from a
e300d. Anybody had any experienc with these conversions and is the engine powerful enough for this size car.

excuse my ignorance, im still trying to learn the model numbers, but whats a w126? an old s class? the car should be ok, but the engine may be a little underpowered if you try to drive it remotely spiritedly. the 300d wasnt the quickest thing around when fitted to the e class! it really depends on the weight its pulling around, ie the car, and the combination of gearbox/final drive/ tyres to get the gearing right. i am of course assuming the car is bigger than an e class or a soft top and therefore heavier.

or you could just try to get a 2nd hand box for your car.........................

Assuming it's the multivalve: the engine is powerful enough but it will be slow!

I'd want to thoroughly check how the conversion has been done as such things as the final ratio, etc,. would be different. It would also be interesting to see if such things as the rev-counter have been mated.

Also, it might be expensive to insure.

I looked for a second hand gearbox but they are very rare in Ireland and would cost me more than I paid for the car. I like the w126 S class, but would prefer a diesel and they too are also very rare in ireland.

Didn't they offer this combination for other markets back then? Might have been a turbo though. There seems to be a lot mentioned on US forums, they can't all be conversions?

They did, but it wasn't the multivalve engine.

The cheapest way to a second hand gearbox might be a cheap donor car and switch the gearboxes over and sell on the donor with a duff gearbox in the boot of it.

Does anybody know if the gearbox from a 1996 e250 diesel would fit the 1994 e250 diesel. I think it is the same engine. The 1996 is a different shape with the round headlights.

are they both 4/5 speed or is the 1996 car a 5 speed and yours a 4 speed? not sure on the crossover dates for the 4 speed to 5 speed but the propshaft will probably be shorter on a 5 speed car than a 4 speed car. otherwise i can see no reason why it shouldnt fit,as long as the mountings are in the same position or can be adapted to suit. as far as im aware, its the same engine. dont take that as 100% guaranteed though!

From memory the E210 box is a 722.436 and the W124 is a 722.435. I have replaced a 722.435 with a 722.436 and the only difference we found was that the speedo drive is mechanical on the W124 and electronic on the W210. Swop the drive assembly and you're cooking with gas. Or diesel, as the case may be
