Recently acquired non turbo 1995 W124 Diesel estate with non operational aircon. The compressor doesn't turn with the belt. Don't know much about aircon. Is this likely to be a gas problem or should I assume a new compressor? Are there any easy tests to make?

Hi,

I also don't know much about air con but until I select the aircon with the top button on the dash ( 1994 E300D) my compressor also does not turn. I would suggest a search of the forum as there are some excellent posts from people who know what they are talking about, and checking the refrigerent level in your system. On mine it's locate behind the passenger side headlight, between the chassis leg and the wing. You should be able to see a level in the ciontainer.
Failing all of that a trip to your local Serck premises may be in order.

Hope that helps some.

E300 aircon

Hi Andy

Thanks for the tip and for writing. It turns out it just needed a refill but I'll have to wait and see if it holds the gas!

lots of things it could be

Is it working perfectly now with the new gas?

if so and it later stops then you have a leak but hopefully its ok from now.

Andy - the a/c should be working automatically without having to hit the top button provided the cabin temp is warm enough to trigger it. try driving with both dials on cold on a hot day and with fan at half speed windows shut. Your should get cold air without the top button pressed. If not then you have a control problem of some sort , either the controller or one of the 4 temp sensors probably.
